Women's Soccer to Complete Four-Game Home Stand
GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – Wrapping up a four-game home stand to kick off the 2014 season, the Green Bay women’s soccer team will host Northern Iowa on Fri. (Aug. 29) and North Dakota on Sun. (Aug. 31) to conclude the month of August.
The Phoenix (1-1-0) will look to finish the front-loaded home slate with a couple more wins, having already won its season-opener 3-1 over IUPUI. Green Bay will play seven of its next eight matches away from Santaga Stadium, making this weekend a critical part of the non-conference season.
Friday’s match against the Panthers will kick off at 1 p.m., while Sunday’s game against North Dakota will begin at noon.
ABOUT GREEN BAY
The Phoenix suffered the first setback of the 2014 season, including both preseason and regular season, with a 2-0 shutout loss to Ball State. The Cardinals are expected to finish near the top of the MAC, giving Green Bay a highly-competitive match that the team is sure to benefit from. With back-to-back games at home, the Phoenix have a golden opportunity to get back to its winning ways.
Following a two-goal performance against IUPUI in the season opener, junior Heidi Hartmann (Plymouth, Minn.) was tabbed as the Horizon League’s Offensive Player of the Week. She has scored two goals in just six shots on goal, while logging 80-plus minutes in both contests this past weekend. Hartmann has showed the speed and skill to break through opposing defenses and the league rewarded her for a strong start to 2014.
Green Bay has tallied 14 corner kicks in two games, and have surrendered just eight to its’ opponents. The team recorded nine corners against Ball State on Sunday, with five coming in the second half. The squad averaged just 4.8 corner kicks per game last season, so the seven corners per contest is certainly an improvement and an indicator of the Phoenix’ attempt to push the ball up the field.
ABOUT THE OPPONENTS
The Panthers went 1-1-0 last weekend to begin the season, falling to Iowa in double overtime (1-0) before defeating St. Ambrose 1-0 at home. Friday’s game will be the first road match for UNI this season, while the team will travel to Madison to face Wisconsin on Sunday.
North Dakota opened the season with a 1-0 road loss to in-state rival North Dakota State on Aug. 22. UND was then scheduled to face South Dakota State on Aug. 24, but due to the heavy rains in the Grand Forks area the game was canceled.
Northern Iowa – These two teams are very familiar with one another, having met 10 times all-time. Green Bay has controlled the series, winning eight of the 10 meetings with the most recent outing coming in 2012 (Green Bay won 1-0).
North Dakota – Green Bay has never lost to North Dakota, boasting a perfect 3-0-0 record all-time in the series. The most recent meeting came in 2011 in Green Bay, when the Phoenix registered a 3-1 victory.
