GREEN BAY, Wis. ( – Beginning his first season leading the Green Bay men’s soccer program, Marc Baumbach has high expectations and excitement entering the 2014 season. The team opened up the new season with a morning training session and will continue practicing twice a day until the season-opener.

A conditioning test of extreme efforts started the new season for the Phoenix, with the players working together as a team and encouraging one another on to successfully complete the challenging fitness course. A total of 40 minutes of running and sprinting kicked off the new season, but Baumbach still enjoyed what he saw in the morning session.

“The guys came out today and worked really hard. They really got after it. We set a good standard for what to expect this season. They’ve been a pleasure to work with and I’m looking forward to each and every session we have.” Baumbach said.

The team returns seven of the nine players to record a point in 2013, but said goodbye to two of the top three in that category. Back in the Phoenix green will be a pair of All-League performers in Lawrence Talery (Cood Rapids, Minn.) and Audi Jepson (Green Bay, Wis.), who will be relied upon to produce this season.

The first scrimmage of the season for the Phoenix will come on Thursday, Sept. 21, at home against St. Thomas with kickoff slated for 3 p.m. That will give the squad eight days of practice and training before they take the field for their first full contest.

“The quality of work ethic we put forward in all of our meetings and attention to detail has been top notch here early. As we move along in the preseason and really get to know one another, I think we’ll see a lot of good things come out of this year’s team,” Baumbach said.

Last season was highlighted by the team earning the Chancellor’s Cup back from Milwaukee, who the Phoenix will face at home this season on Wednesday, Oct. 1. That match will also serve as the Horizon League opener in 2014.

Green Bay will open the 2014 season at home against Grand Canyon on Friday, Aug. 29, and will follow that match against DePaul back at Santaga Stadium on Monday, Sept. 1.
