GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – Entering her first season as head coach of the Green Bay women’s soccer program, Kacey Burke announced the 2014 schedule on Friday afternoon, which is highlighted by a visit from defending Horizon League champion and in-state rival Milwaukee in October.
Milwaukee will pay Aldo Santaga Stadium a visit on Oct. 8, a year after taking down the 2013 league championship. The Panthers are joined by DePaul as the other 2013 NCAA Tournament team from a season ago on this year’s schedule to visit Green Bay, as the Phoenix will play host to the Blue Demons on Sept. 11.
“We are extremely excited for the fall season to get underway. A good slate of non-conference games with quality regional opponents has been put together that will prepare us well for the Horizon League portion of our season,” said Burke.
Following a two-year stint as an assistant coach at the University of Oklahoma, Burke was selected to lead the Green Bay program in July. She will enjoy her first career game as head coach on Friday, Aug. 22, against IUPUI at home. The home-opener and her first as the leader of the Phoenix will be followed by three-consecutive home matches in August, giving Green Bay four-straight matches at home to kickoff 2014.
Ball State (Aug. 24), Northern Iowa (Aug. 29) and North Dakota (Aug. 31) follow IUPUI, giving the Phoenix a lengthy home-field advantage to start the season.
Following that four-match homestand, the Phoenix will visit the Windy City to face Chicago State (Sept. 5) and Loyola (Sept. 7). A home contest against talented DePaul (Sept. 11) follows that weekend road swing.
Three-straight on the road against nonconference foes from the state of Illinois begins a five-match road swing to end September. The Phoenix will visit Eastern Illinois (Sep. 14), Northern Illinois (Sep. 17) and Western Illinois (Sept. 21) before beginning Horizon League play.
The conference slate kicks off with a pair of road matches at Oakland (Sept. 27) and Wright State (Oct. 4). Rival Milwaukee will serve as the conference home-opener on Oct. 8 under the lights.
A weekend trip to Cleveland State (Oct. 11) will take place before returning home to play Detroit (Oct. 18). The final road match of the season will take place on Oct. 22 when Green Bay heads south to face UIC.
The season concludes with a pair of home matches against Youngstown State (Oct. 25) and Valparaiso on Halloween night (Oct. 31).
“We are looking forward to having our group of student-athletes arrive on campus and begin preparation for what we believe will be a successful year for Green Bay women’s soccer,” said Burke.
The team went 4-8-5 a season ago, but returns 18 players for the upcoming season, including First-Team All-Horizon League selection and senior Hannah Kernen (Belleville, Wis.).
