Phoenix Student-Athletes Rise Above 3.0 GPA for 29th Straight Semester
GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – Student-athletes at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay combined to achieve a department-wide grade-point average of 3.19 in the spring of 2014, marking the 29th consecutive semester above a 3.0 GPA.
“We have great expectations for our student-athletes, but to maintain this success over 29 consecutive semesters is special,” Green Bay Director of Athletics Mary Ellen Gillespie said. “I know how hard our student-athletes work every day, and this semester is once again proof of the commitment they have made in the classroom. This is a very proud moment for Green Bay Athletics.”
Of Green Bay’s 16 sport programs, 12 achieved a team GPA of 3.0 or better, and 10 earned above a 3.2. Softball posted a department-best 3.59 GPA in the spring, while women’s soccer (3.57), men’s Nordic skiing (3.54) and women’s cross country (3.52) were also above a 3.5.
Additional team GPAs above a 3.2 were men’s tennis (3.48), women’s Nordic skiing (3.46), women’s tennis (3.46), volleyball (3.36), men’s golf (3.27) and men’s cross country (3.23).
A total of 153 Phoenix student-athletes – nearly 70 percent – posted individual GPAs of 3.0 or higher. Furthermore, 98 were above 3.5 and 57 were at 3.75 or better. Twenty-five student-athletes earned perfect 4.0 GPAs, including five from softball and four from women’s cross country.
“Balancing schoolwork and competition is not easy,” Gillespie said. “Excelling in both is an incredible achievement, and the fact that some of our top performers on the field are some of our best students is very special. It takes a village to provide a first-rate experience for student-athletes, and our coaches, department and university faculty and staff do a tremendous job and are important members of our team.”
UW-Green Bay held its annual spring commencement ceremony on May 17 at the Kress Events Center, where several Phoenix student-athletes received their diplomas and others associated with Green Bay Athletics received prestigious University honors.
