GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – Green Bay men’s tennis junior Michael Tenzer (Neuried, Germany) has been selected as the Horizon League Scholar-Athlete of the Month for April, the conference office announced on Thursday. The award, which recognizes both strong athletic performance and academic achievement, is voted on by faculty athletic representatives from the league’s member institutions.

It marks the second scholar-athlete of the month honor of Tenzer’s career, as he also received the award as a sophomore in April of 2013.

Tenzer, the 2014 Horizon League Player of the Year, led the Phoenix to a perfect 8-0 record in the month of April (18-8 overall), helping his squad win Horizon League regular season and tournament titles, as well as advance to the NCAA Tournament. In the classroom, he maintains an impressive 3.74 grade-point average as a business administration major.

Tenzer posted an unbeaten 8-0 record at No. 1 singles during the month of April, as well as an unblemished 6-0 mark at No. 1 doubles with teammate Howard Scott (Exeter, England). He earned his fourth Horizon League Player of the Week award on April 21 after helping Green Bay to its second straight regular season crown, and was chosen as Horizon League Player of the Year for the second season in a row on April 24. He was also named to the all-league first team for the third consecutive year.

The junior was instrumental in Green Bay’s 4-3 Horizon League Championship victory over Cleveland State on April 27, as Tenzer helped secure the doubles point with an 8-4 win at the top spot before picking up a straight-set No. 1 singles win (6-2, 6-3). The victory delivered the program’s second NCAA Tournament trip in the last three seasons, as the Phoenix went on to fall 4-0 at No. 13 Notre Dame on May 10.

Tenzer recently helped Green Bay Athletics achieve above a 3.0 GPA for the 29th consecutive semester in the spring of 2014, aiding the men’s tennis squad to a 3.48 team GPA.
