Freshman Steen Fires Saturday's Best Round at HL Championships
HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – Freshman Avery Steen (Luck, Wis.) played the final six holes in 3-under par on Saturday, carding a 2-over 75 for the best round of the day at the 2014 Horizon League Women’s Golf Championships. The Phoenix is in seventh place after round two of the 54-hole tournament at the 5,975-yard, par-73 Las Colinas Course at Mission Inn Resort. The final 18 holes are set for Sunday morning.
Oakland (624) holds an eight-shot lead over Detroit (632), and Green Bay is 36 shots behind the Golden Grizzlies heading into Sunday morning’s final round after rounds of 328 and 332. Youngstown State’s Emily Dixon and Detroit’s Lindsey Lammers are tied for first among individuals.
Steen, who struggled to an 84 on Friday, bogeyed her first four holes on Saturday morning. After the rough start, Steen had possibly the best stretch of her rookie campaign to move into a tie for 13th place. Over the course of the final 14 holes, Steen was 2-under par with nine pars, three birdies and just one bogey. Each of her birdies came on the last five holes.
Sophomore Steph Laude (Slinger, Wis.) had two birdies on Saturday en route to her second-straight 81. Laude enters Sunday alone in 18th place. Sophomore Sammi Grunder (82-87=169, T26), senior Molly Fassbinder (81-92=173, T30) and sophomore Katie Pokrandt (86-89=175, T33) round out the Phoenix golfers.
The Phoenix tee times on Sunday morning will begin at 6:30 p.m. CST and live scoring for the women’s tournament can be found here: http://www.golfstatresults.com/public/indexh.cfm?tournament_id=5246
