Phoenix Golf Squads Open Horizon League Championships
HOWEY-IN-THE-HILLS, Fla. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – The Green Bay men’s and women’s golf teams opened the 2014 Horizon League Golf Championships on Friday morning at Mission Inn Resort in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla. After the opening round of the 54-hole event, the Phoenix men and women stand in fifth and seventh, respectively.
Playing on the 6,776-yard, par-72 El Campeon Course, the men shot a 23-over par 311 on Friday and sit just 11 strokes out of first place as the top six teams are within 13 shots. Cleveland State (300) is the opening round leader while Detroit (303), Youngstown State (305) and Valparaiso (311) also join Green Bay in the top-five.
Junior Tom Boockmeier (Green Bay, Wis.) made the turn at 4-over par, but carded three birdies on the back and played his final six holes in 2-under par to finish at 3-over par 75 in a tie for sixth place. Detroit’s Spencer Lendzion and Cleveland State’s Michael Balcar are tied atop of the individual leaderboard after shooting 1-under par 71.
Like Boockmeier, senior Dan Ozga (Edgerton, Wis.) finished well on Monday with four pars and a birdie over his last five holes. Ozga is tied for 11th after posting a 5-over 77. Junior Joseph Collard (Marinette, Wis.) and redshirt freshman Joe Du Chateau (Fond du Lac, Wis.) are tied for 19th (+7, 79) and tied for 24th (+8, 80), respectively.

Competing on the 5,975-yard, par-73 Las Colinas Course, the Phoenix women are in seventh place after a team total of 36-over par 328 on Friday.
Senior Molly Fassbinder (Hudson, Wis.) and sophomore Steph Laude (Slinger, Wis.) led the way with rounds of 8-over par 81 and are tied for 18th place. Laude carded 11 pars on the day and Fassbinder birdied three holes, including No. 18.
Sophomores Sammi Grunder (Pardeeville, Wis.) eagled the par-5 14th hole en route to a 9-over par 82 that left her tied for 22nd. Freshman Avery Steen (Luck, Wis.) also carded a counting round with an 11-over par 84.
