GREEN BAY, Wis. ( – Green Bay junior Michael Tenzer (Neuried, Germany) was selected as the Horizon League Men’s Tennis Player of the Week on Monday after leading his squad to a pair of conference victories over the weekend while posting an unbeaten individual record.

Tenzer, being honored as Player of the Week for the third time in his career, tallied a 4-0 record in singles and doubles as the Phoenix (12-7, 2-0 HL) got its Horizon League schedule started with wins over Valparaiso (6-1 on Saturday) and UIC (7-0 on Sunday) at Western Racquet and Fitness Club. The wins helped Green Bay finish off the home portion of its schedule with a perfect 7-0 mark.

“I am very proud of the way Michael competed in the opening weekend of conference play,” Phoenix head coach Mark Thomas said. “He was very composed in the various situations he was in and stepped his game up to the next level any time he fell behind. Michael was poised in closing out all of his matches. He is extremely confident when playing the big points.”

On Saturday, Tenzer posted an impressive 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 victory at No. 1 singles against Valpo standout Jeffrey Schorsch. Schorsch, a freshman, entered the match with a school-record 24 singles wins for the Crusaders this season, including a 15-2 record at the top spot this spring.

Tenzer also teamed up with sophomore Howard Scott (Exeter, England) on Saturday for an intense 8-7 (10-8) win over Dave Bacalla and Daniel Oakes at No. 1 doubles to clinch the match’s opening point.

Sunday once again saw Tenzer and Scott team up for a win at No. 1 doubles, this one in convincing fashion (8-2) against UIC’s Carl Hedstrom and Maurizio Feoli. Tenzer went on to post a 7-6, 6-1 victory at No. 1 singles against the Flames’ Alexander Raa to help the Phoenix complete the sweep.

Tenzer is now 12-4 in singles action in 2014 and 13-6 in doubles play. He is the third Phoenix player to earn weekly honors this season, as Leopold Gomez Islinger (Weiden, Germany) was recognized on Feb. 17 and Scott received the award in the fall on Sept. 23.

Green Bay will play its final four regular season contests away from home, beginning with trips to Cleveland State on Saturday and Youngstown State on Sunday.
