GREEN BAY, Wis. ( – Despite his career coming to an end last month, Green Bay’s Alec Brown (Winona, Minn.) is still being recognized for his performance as a Phoenix. The 7-foot-1 big man was named a finalist this week for the 2014 Lefty Driesell National Defensive Player of the Year award, announced. As one of 25 finalists for the award, Brown also earned a spot on the 2013-14 Lefty Driesell Defensive All-America Team.

The Driesell Award is handed out annually to the top defensive player in the nation and will be awarded at the Awards Banquet on Friday in Dallas, site of the Final Four. Brown and junior Keifer Sykes (Chicago, Ill.) are finalists for the Lou Henson Award for Mid-Major Player of the Year and Green Bay head coach Brian Wardle is a finalist for the Skip Prosser Man of the Year award, which will also be named at the banquet.

Wardle, Sykes and Brown led the Phoenix to a 24-7 record and a 14-2 mark in conference play to claim the program’s first Horizon League regular season title in 18 years. Sykes (6 times) and Brown (4 times) combined to win 10 of the conference’s 17 player of the week awards. Read a complete season recap here.

The 7-foot-1 Brown started rewriting the Phoenix blocked shot records from the moment he put on a uniform, and had his best defensive campaign as a senior in 2013-14. Brown broke his own single-season school record for rejections (94) and tied the Horizon League career blocks record (309). He owns the top four single-season blocks totals in program history.

Averaging 3.2 blocks per game, Brown tied for seventh nationally and led the Horizon League. On March 3, the senior was named the Horizon League Defensive Player of the Year and to the All-Defensive Team for the second-straight season.

In 2013-14, Green Bay ranked second nationally in blocks per game (7.3) and broke the program’s single-season team record for the fourth consecutive season with 223. In the past four seasons, Green Bay blocked 10 or more shots as a team in a game 10 times, with Brown alone posting double-digit rejections twice.

As a sophomore, Brown set a Horizon League and program record with 11 blocks in a victory over Wright State, and, on Nov. 23, 2014, Brown blocked 10 shots as part of a triple-double performance against Minnesota Duluth.
