Two Phoenix Compete at USSA Cross Country Junior Championships

STOWE, Vt. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – Green Bay Phoenix Nordic skiers junior Matt Nichols (Wausau, Wis.) and freshman Kyle Marshall (Roseville, Minn.) wrapped up the weeklong 2014 USSA Cross Country Junior Championships at the Trapp Family Lodge in Stowe, Vermont, with a strong showing for the Phoenix.
On Monday, Nichols placed seventh out of 54 competitors in the men’s U20 10k individual start classic, crossing the finish line in a time of 28:54.5. Marshall finished tied for 18th with a time of 29:44.8.
In the classic sprint race on Wednesday, Nichols made it through four rounds of competition to finish in 12th place in the U20 grouping. In the first round of sprints Nichols finished 11th, while Kyle finished in 25th to advance both racers to the quarterfinals. Racing in the quarterfinals, Nichols advanced with a second-place finish in his heat, while Marshall narrowly missed advancing with a third-place finish in 3:24.45. Nichols went on to finish fourth in his semifinals heat and in the 'B' finals concluded a long day of racing with a 12th-place finish after a crash in the round in 3:18.78.
On the final day of racing on Friday, Nichols placed fifth in the 15km mass start skate, just five seconds off of the podium, while Marshall finished 23rd.
