Fouse Fuels Comeback as Green Bay Claims Outright Title
ROCHESTER, Mich. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – After the first possession of the second half on Thursday night, visiting Green Bay (23-5, 13-2 HL) found itself down 15 points to Oakland (11-19, 6-9 HL). Sparked by the offense and defense of sophomore Jordan Fouse (Racine, Wis.), the Phoenix outscored the Golden Grizzlies 40-17 over the final 19:22 and won 71-63 at the O’Rena.
With its fourth-straight victory, Green Bay secured the outright 2013-14 Horizon League regular season title. The Phoenix will finish the regular season on Saturday, playing at Detroit at 3 p.m.
Green Bay trailed 48-34 before Fouse scored three consecutive layups to spark an 11-0 run over the next four-plus minutes. The 6-foot-7 forward made 6-of-6 shots from the field and finished with a season-high 16 points and nine rebounds.
Oakland extended its lead to 54-50 before the Phoenix used another 8-0 run to take the lead for good with 10 minutes to play. Part of the run was an alley oop lob from freshman Tevin Findlay (Malton, Ontario) to junior Alfonzo McKinnie (Chicago, Ill.) for a monster dunk.
Green Bay held a 64-61 lead with four minutes to play when sophomore Carrington Love (Milwaukee, Wis.) stole the ball from Oakland’s Duke Mondy. On the other end, the Phoenix milked the shot clock before McKinnie knocked down a triple for a 67-61 lead at the 3:36 mark. McKinnie made 4-of-5 shots, including 2-of-2 from long range, and finished with a season-high 10 points.
Brown and Sykes were overshadowed by Fouse and McKinnie, but the All-Horizon League duo combined for 34 points. Brown totaled 18 points and made a career-high four triples, and Sykes tallied 16 points, six rebounds and six assists.
In the second half, Green Bay held Oakland to just 19 points on 8-of-24 from the field and 1-of-12 from long range. The Phoenix held Oakland sharpshooter to just six points on 1-of-11 from the field and 1-of-9 from long range. This season against Green Bay, Bader has combined for 14 points on 3-of-23 from the field and 3-of-20 from beyond the arc.
With Fouse and McKinnie combining for 10-of-11, Green Bay finished the game 28-of-48 from the field, including 17-of-26 in the second half.
