CLEVELAND (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – The Green Bay women posted five top-eight finishes and moved into third place on Thursday, and the men’s squad saw two more school records fall on the second day of the 2014 Horizon League Swimming and Diving Championships at the Busbey Natatorium.

The Phoenix women have 200 team points at the meet’s midway point, trailing Oakland (319) and Milwaukee (291), while the men are currently sixth in the team standings.

Senior Parker Wolf (Kohler, Wis.) had a standout day in the pool for the Green Bay women, posting the top time in the 50-yard freestyle preliminaries (23.49) before finishing third in the finals with a time of 23.51. The 23.49 was a career-best and was also the second-fastest time in school history.

It was sophomore Willem Poelmans (Hasselt, Belgium) who corralled a third-place finish on the men’s side, racing to a new school record in the 200 IM. Poelmans’ time of 1:48.08 shattered his own Green Bay mark of 1:49.06 – set at last year’s conference meet when he won the event and also set a new league record – and was also good enough for an NCAA B-cut. The top five finishers in Thursday’s race broke Poelmans’ previous Horizon League record.

Green Bay’s 400 medley relay team of Poelmans, Evan Hill (Jefferson, Wis.), Ryan Korslin (Rudolph, Wis.) and Robert Miner (Madison, Wis.) also set a school record on Thursday in the day’s final event, racing to a blazing fourth-place time of 3:17.26. It beat the previous school record of 3:19.75, which was set in 2013 (Hill, Lesniak, Miner, Evans).

Other top-eight finishers for the Phoenix were Crystal Franzwa (Winona, Minn.) in the women’s 1-meter dive (7th, 236.70), Kendra Rottier (Green Bay, Wis.) and Anna Gomez (Burlington, Wis.) in the women’s 500 free (7th, 4:58.93 and 8th, 5:00.72), Connor Huff (Dubuque, Iowa) in the men’s 500 free (8th, 4:36.06) and Natalie Neuwirth (Stevens Point, Wis.) in the women’s 200 IM (8th, 2:05.77).

Green Bay returns to action on Friday with prelims at 9 a.m. CT and finals at 4:30 p.m. CT. Visit the Horizon League Championship Central Page for a complete schedule and live video links.
