Poelmans Earns Horizon League Honors After Record-Breaking Win
GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – Green Bay sophomore Willem Poelmans (Hasselt, Belgium) picked up Horizon League Men’s Swimmer of the Week honors on Tuesday for the second time this season following a record-breaking performance against Wisconsin over the weekend.
Poelmans won the 200-yard individual medley against the Badgers on Saturday with a time of 1:52.32, out-touching the UW’s Ryan O’Donnell (1:52.77) and setting a new pool record at the Peter F. Dorschel Natatorium. The previous record was held by Milwaukee’s David Dvorak, who registered a time of 1:53.16 in the 2011 season.
“Willem is truly a competitor who loves great races and the challenge that comes with swimming against very talented individuals,” Phoenix head coach Jim Merner said. “It’s fun to watch Willem get up for those types of races, and it’s a very nice honor for him to receive for the second time this year.”
Poelmans recorded the lone victory for the Phoenix men on Saturday, as Wisconsin earned the 140-98 win. Poelmans also had a pair of third-place finishes in the 100 free (47.14) and the 200 breaststroke (2:08.24) in the team’s regular season finale.
The Green Bay men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams are next in action at the 2014 Horizon League Championships, held Feb. 26-March 1 in Cleveland, Ohio.
