GREEN BAY, Wis. ( – Junior Keifer Sykes (Chicago, Ill.) was named the Horizon League Player of the Week for the sixth time in 2013-14 on Monday, breaking the league record for weekly awards in one season. It also marks the 10th Horizon League Player of the Week accolade in Sykes’ career, tying the record held by former Detroit standout Rashad Philips.

Winners of 12-straight games, Green Bay (17-3, 7-0 HL) has won Horizon League Player of the Week honors in nine of 12 weeks this season, including each of the past four weeks. Senior Alec Brown (Winona, Minn.) is a three-time winner in 2013-14.

With Green Bay beating both Oakland and Detroit at the Resch Center, Sykes may have won the award if he had only played in the second halves. On Wednesday, Sykes scored 20 of his game-high 27 points after halftime as Green Bay rallied past Oakland for an 83-69 victory. The junior added eight rebounds and six assists in the victory over the Golden Grizzlies.

In Sunday’s victory over Detroit, Sykes had just six points at halftime but scored 16 of Green Bay’s 32 after intermission as the Phoenix posted a 62-52 victory. In seven Horizon League games, Sykes is averaging 15.9 points per game after halftime while shooting 54 percent from the field, 47.1 percent from long range and 83.3 percent from the free-throw line.

For the week, Sykes averaged 24.5 points, eight rebounds and three assists per game while posting his 12th and 13th 20-point games of the season. The Chicago native is now 18th nationally and leading the Horizon League in scoring with an average of 20.8 points per game.

Green Bay will be back in action on Wednesday, playing at Valparaiso at 7 p.m. The Phoenix returns home to begin a three-game homestand on Saturday, beginning the second half of Horizon League play and hosting Wright State at 6 p.m.

  • The Phoenix ranks 16th nationally in field goal percentage defense (.383) and 34th nationally in field goal percentage (.479).
