– UW-Green Bay student-athletes combined to achieve an impressive 3.21 grade-point average in the Fall 2013 semester, marking the 28th semester in a row above a 3.0. It also marked the fifth consecutive semester that Phoenix Athletics has posted above a 3.2 department GPA.

“Once again, our young men and women represent what being a true student-athlete is all about,” Green Bay Director of Athletics Mary Ellen Gillespie said. “We are extremely proud of our coaches who recruit outstanding students and demonstrate a dedication to commitment in the classroom.”

Thirteen of Green Bay’s 16 sport programs achieved a semester GPA of 3.0 or higher, while eight of those were above a 3.25. Men’s tennis led all Phoenix sports with a remarkable 3.63 GPA, while women’s cross country was close behind at 3.57.

Other team GPAs above a 3.25 included men’s Nordic skiing (3.51), women’s Nordic skiing (3.47), softball (3.46), volleyball (3.38), women’s soccer (3.37) and women’s basketball (3.26).

Nearly 70 percent (163) of all Phoenix student-athletes achieved individual GPAs of 3.0 or higher, while 20 earned perfect 4.0 averages. Over 40 percent (95) of student-athletes garnered some sort of academic honors, including 59 who achieved either high (3.75-3.99) or highest (4.0) honors.

The 3.21 combined GPA was the second-highest fall average in school history, trailing only last year’s mark of 3.24.

“Our staff works tirelessly to ensure our student-athletes have the best possible academic, athletic and personal experiences at Green Bay,” Gillespie said. “The success of our student-athletes is enhanced through teamwork and collaborations with our top-notch campus support areas and faculty and staff.”

Green Bay Athletics graduated 13 student-athletes in December of 2013, and also had several recognized at the University Leadership Awards program on Dec. 13. Women’s soccer graduate Hekla Palmadottir (Akranes, Iceland) was a recipient of the Fall 2013 University Leadership Award, while nine student-athletes garnered Who’s Who Among Students in American Colleges and Universities honors.
