Hannah Kernen and Katie Schulz Collect All-Conference Honors
GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – With the Horizon League regular season complete the conference released its all-league teams, and junior Hannah Kernen (Belleville, Wis.) was named first team all-league, while freshman Katie Schulz (Plymouth, Minn.) was tabbed to the all-freshman squad.
“I'm very pleased for both of them,” Head Coach Trevor Warren said. “Hannah has had a great season and deserves to be among the best 11 players in the Horizon League. No matter where I played her or who she went up against she dominated that area of the field and was easily our most effective and dangerous player.
“Katie also established herself as a starter in the team initially as a defender and then as the defensive midfielder. She has been very consistent and played with a lot of maturity. She has a very bright future in the program.”
Kernen started 16 of 17 matches for the Phoenix this season, finishing with a team-best three goals. She netted the game-winning goal in a 3-1 triumph over Western Illinois before recording goals in back-to-back conference games against Oakland and at Youngstown State.
In her first season with Green Bay, Schulz appeared in 17 matches with 15 starts. She recorded one assist in a 1-0 win over Northern Illinois and was a key member of the Phoenix defense that finished the season with five shutouts while holding opponents to 1.12 goals per game.
Milwaukee junior Kelly Lewers was named the Horizon League Women’s Soccer Player of the Year and Offensive Player of the Year, while Wright State junior Allie Metzler earned Defensive Player of the Year accolades. Valparaiso’s Morgan Manzke collected Freshman of the Year honors.
The Phoenix concluded its season with an overall record of 4-8-5 and a 1-5-1 mark in the Horizon League.
