GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – The Green Bay women’s basketball team collected 12 first-place votes and 583 overall points to take the fourth spot in the CollegeInsider.com Women’s Mid-Major Top 25 Preseason Poll, announced this week.

Gonzaga topped the poll receiving 15 first-place votes and 749 total points, while Marist stood second with one first-place vote and 592 total points. Princeton of the Ivy League narrowly edged Green Bay for third place with 584 total points.

Green Bay was the only team from the Horizon League in the Top 25. Youngstown State (4 pts.) and Detroit (3 pts.) also received votes in the poll.

The Mid-Major Poll is made up of teams from the following conferences: America East, Atlantic Sun, Big Sky, Big South, Big West, Colonial, Horizon, Independents, Ivy, Metro Atlantic, Mid-American, Mid-Eastern, Missouri Valley, Northeast, Ohio Valley, Patriot, Southern, Southland, Southwestern, Summit, Sun Belt, West Coast and Western Athletic.

The Phoenix returns just one starter from last season’s squad that went 29-3 overall and 16-0 in the conference, capturing the 15th-consecutive Horizon League regular season championship while advancing to the NCAA Tournament for the 14th time in program history.

Junior Megan Lukan (Barrie, Ontario) started all 32 games last season and led the team with 4.4 assists while averaging 7.1 points and 31.9 minutes per game. Senior Breannah Ranger (Skokie, Ill.) appeared in 30 games a season ago and tied for the team lead with 5.1 rebounds per game in addition to chipping in 7.3 points per game.

Green Bay kicks off the 2013-14 season with an exhibition game at home against St. Cloud State on Saturday at 1 p.m. After another exhibition game against Northern Michigan on November 2, the Phoenix opens the regular season at home for the first time in 26 seasons against Northern Illinois on November 8.
