GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – During his time as a college counselor at the 2013 adidas Nations Basketball Experience, Alec Brown (Winona, Minn.) had the chance to work alongside a number of coaches with experience at both the college and professional levels. Among those coaches was longtime college head coach and current ESPN basketball analyst Fran Fraschilla. Kyle Binder of the Horizon League Network recently spoke with Fraschilla, who shared a number of thoughts on Brown, the Green Bay men’s basketball program and the Horizon League.

Fran Fraschilla
On how long he has been following Alec Brown:
“I started following him as a freshman and sophomore because although he hasn’t always been a national name, there are always guys like him that are playing at the mid-major level that don’t get the attention and hype that maybe a guy in the Big Ten or ACC would get. I have always been partial to guys that seemingly come out of nowhere, but now going into his senior year he has become a well-known player, particularly in the minds of NBA scouts that have been following him the last couple of years because of his size and ability to score the ball.”

On what makes Alec stick out:
“The thing that really impressed me last week at adidas Nations and a number of NBA scouts was his range. For a guy that is seven feet tall and maybe a little bit taller, he shoots the NBA three like it is a foul shot. He has great range and he was very impressive at the camp with his range. I think NBA teams are now looking for the big man that can stretch the floor with their shooting, whether it is at the power forward spot or the center spot. Alec definitely is on people’s radars, and I think it bodes well not only for his future but I think coming into the season for Green Bay with four of their top-five scorers coming back from a team that won 18 games. It bodes well for the program in general.”

On the 2013-14 Green Bay men’s basketball team:
“I think [Green Bay is] dangerous obviously. They have been a team that has been knocking on the door a little bit under Brian Wardle…Brian now has been at Green Bay long enough where he has been able to put his program in place. As you mentioned with a guy like Keifer Sykes in the backcourt…and you talk about guys like Jordan Fouse, Greg Mays and guys like that it is going to really help them.”

On the Horizon League and the NBA:
“Right off the bat you have to talk about Alec because he really is on people’s radars. I think what you love about the NBA right now is it doesn’t matter where you play, they will find you. When you think of Damian Lilliard the rookie of the year this year from Weber State, Steph Curry from Davidson, Ray [McCallum from Detroit. What is fun for me is to see those guys like the Norris Coles [Cleveland State], the Ray McCallums and the Alec Browns…it is fun to see those guys be really, really good at what they do and not necessarily have played at UCLA or Duke. Being a mid-major guy as I was for so long, I keep a close eye on the Horizon League and some of their young players and certainly the coaches.”
