SCOUTING THE
OPPONENTS
Green Bay completed a perfect 2-0 sweep over
Valparaiso in the 2011 season, including a 3-0 win when the Crusaders last
visited the Kress Center. Valparaiso comes to Green Bay after splitting its two
home matches last weekend. The Crusaders fell in five sets to Cleveland State before
rebounding to beat Youngstown State 3-1. Currently fourth in the Horizon
League, the Crusaders have played well at home and at neutral locations, but
are just 3-4 on the road this season. Sophomore Morgan Beil paces the
Valparaiso attack with a 2.27 kills-per-set average.
Winless since mid-September and without a road win yet this season, the Raiders come to Green Bay in the midst of a five-game losing streak. Wright State was unable to pick up a set in both of its matches last weekend, falling 3-0 to both Youngstown State and Cleveland State. Junior Heidi Splinter leads Wright State with 3.14 kills per set, as well as 237 digs, good for second on the team. The Raiders hold a 27-19 all-time advantage over Green Bay, but the Phoenix has won three of the previous four meetings.
LAST TIME
OUT
Green Bay improved to 19-0
all-time against Chicago State in a 3-0 rout of the visiting Cougars Oct. 9. With
sets of 25-18, 25-10 and 26-24, Green Bay snapped a three-game losing streak
and has now won six of its last 10 matches. The Phoenix posted 11 blocks to Chicago
State's two while out-hitting the Cougars .301 to .096. Katie Mroczenski (New Berlin, Wis.), Carmen Leitermann Schofield, Wis.) and Leah Van Zeeland (Kaukauna, Wis.) led the Phoenix with nine kills
each. All 14 players on Green Bay's roster saw playing time in the match.
MATCH POINT
Green Bay head coach Debbie Kirch joined host Ryan Hartwig in studio on Wednesday for this week's episode of Match Point. The two recapped the 3-0 win over Chicago State on Tuesday night and previewed this weekend's matches.
NEXT ON THE SCHEDULE
Green Bay will make a road
trip to Ohio next weekend to begin the second half of Horizon League play, taking
on Youngstown State Friday, Oct. 19 at 6 p.m. and Cleveland State Oct. 20 at 1
p.m. Green Bay will look to go 2-0 against the Penguins this season after winning
3-2 at home Sept. 22. The Phoenix will then try to avenge a 3-1
home loss to the Vikings back on Sept. 21.
