MACOMB, Ill. - Three Green Bay women's tennis players won
their singles flights, two others placed second and two more took third as the
Phoenix shined at the 4th Annual Hinds-Kellogg Classic hosted by Western
Illinois. It was the final event of the fall for the Phoenix, who enjoyed a
stellar fall under second-year head coach Craig Klatt.
Junior Emily Lawent (Milwaukee, Wis.) won the championship
in the A singles flight to highlight the Phoenix efforts. She won convincingly
in straight sets in each of her three matches, ultimately claiming the title
with a 6-2, 6-0 win over South Dakota's Shadi Soleymani.
Freshman Maria Anderson (Marshfield, Wis.) won the E singles
in a third-set tiebreaker. She defeated Milwaukee's Brittany Skemp in the
finals. Meanwhile, senior Lauryn Grimando (Oakbrook, Ill.) was the champion of
the G singles flight. She recorded a 6-0, 6-0 whitewashing of Megan Marsot of Quincy
in the finals.
Freshman Rebecca Nelson (Brookfield, Wis.) placed second at
D singles after winning her first two matches before falling to Milwaukee's Kelly
Fritz in the final. Laura Bartingale (Green Bay, Wis.) was the runner-up in the
flight F singles bracket after dropping a tiebreaker to UWM's Beth Ganser in
the championship tilt.
Junior Jennifer Bradfield (Fairfield, Iowa) placed third in
the B Singles flight, winning her final match 6-0, 6-1. Sophomore Morgan Weuve (Green
Bay, Wis.) also took the bronze spot in the C flight by virtue of a 6-2, 6-2
win.
The Phoenix also dominated the doubles action, sweeping the
three titles. Green Bay's A doubles team won the title with an 8-4 triumph over
the top North Dakota squad. The B tandem also was victorious, winning a 9-8
(7-0) tiebreaker over Western Illinois. The C flight squad cruised to an 8-2
win over South Dakota State to close the event.
