CHICAGO, Ill. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – Green Bay threatened late in the series finale with league-leading UIC on Wednesday afternoon, loading the bases in the bottom of the seventh to bring the go-ahead run to the plate with only one out. The Flames (29-18, 16-2) managed to get out of the jam with a strikeout and groundout to defeat the Phoenix (2-25, 1-12), 3-0, and complete the series sweep.

The Phoenix entered the final inning of play with only a single hit against one of the league’s top pitchers in Allie Trudeau but started to get things rolling against her replacement Lindsay Melson. Senior Abby Brinkmeier led the inning off with a single up the middle and advance to second shortly after on a passed ball.

Allie Taylor followed Brinkmeier’s lead with another single for the Phoenix, placing a pair of runners on with no outs. After a hard shot from Olivia Magaldi was caught by the shortstop, Brennan Engel used her at-bat to draw a walk and load the bases for Green Bay.

UIC held strong in the final Phoenix plate appearances and picked up another strikeout and forced a groundout to end the game and complete the series sweep with a 3-0 win.

Green Bay had three total hits in the game compared to UIC’s seven. All of the Flames’ runs came from a pair of home runs from the bats of Willis and Speth.

Katie Rossman put in five innings of work for the Phoenix and allowed seven hits, three runs and picked up a season-high three strikeouts.

Green Bay’s weekend schedule has been altered due to anticipated rainfall Wednesday night and Thursday, with games against Youngstown State being pushed back to Saturday (1 p.m. & 3 p.m.) and Sunday (12 p.m.) Prior to the first game Saturday, the Phoenix will recognize its three seniors – Abby Brinkmeier, Hailee Frey and Allie Taylor – for their contributions to the Phoenix program.
