Men's Basketball, Darner Ink Two More to NLI for 2017 Class
GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – A talented junior college transfer and a highly-recruited high school senior have signed National Letters of Intent to play college basketball at Green Bay, head coach Linc Darner announced on Thursday. Sukhjot Bains (Delta, British Columbia; Northwest College) and Manny Patterson (Chicago, Ill.; Kenwood Academy) will both join the Phoenix men’s basketball program this coming fall.
The pair of signees joins incoming freshmen Trevian Bell (Joliet, Ill.), Will Chevalier (Kimberly, Wis.) and PJ Pipes Jr. (Woodridge, Ill.) to sign an NLI in 2016-17 to join forces with RP40 starting in the 2017-18 season.
Bains, a 6-foot-6 guard-forward combo, was born in India but raised in British Columbia, Canada. He spent the past two seasons at Northwest College in Powell, Wyoming. The athletic Bains averaged 13.4 PPG and 8.0 RPG last season, all while shooting 45.3 percent from the field.
“I am able to shoot and I am pretty versatile,” Bains said. “He (Linc Darner) likes to press full court for 40 minutes and he likes to play up-tempo and fast, which are things I think I am pretty good at doing.”
He will come to Green Bay with two years of eligibility remaining, starting with his junior season in 2017-18.
Patterson, a 6-foot-8 skilled big man, played his high school basketball at Kenwood Academy in Chicago, and was highly recruited and sought after by multiple Division I schools. Averaging almost 15.0 PPG and 9.0 RPG, Patterson chose Green Bay over other mid-major contenders and is one of four players that have signed to play at Green Bay originally from the state of Illinois (Bell, Pipes and Turner).
“Green Bay was the place for me because they have been with me throughout this process. They were in my corner when things weren’t going well for me and they believed in me as much as I believe in myself,” Patterson said.
He has registered several double-doubles this season and was named to the Chicago Sun Times Newspaper All City team for the second year in a row, while also being named IBCA Fourth Team All-State his senior year. He led his team to the IHSA 4A State Regional Title this past season.
Bains will join Kaharri Carter in the junior class this upcoming season, a roster that will now have only two seniors with All-Defensive Team returnee Khalil Small and David Jesperson. Trevor Anderson, Kameron Hankerson and Avery Brown (redshirted in 2016-17) will return for their sophomore seasons, while Bell, Chevalier, Patterson and Pipes will begin their freshmen seasons in 2017-18. Sandy Cohen III will await a decision from the NCAA to determine his year of eligibility, as either a junior or a senior.
Green Bay finished 18-14 this past season and made its seventh postseason appearance in the past nine seasons. The team will be entering its third season under the direction of head coach Linc Darner. He and his staff will be challenged with replacing the departure of seven key players, which includes over 76 percent of its scoring and over 72 percent of its rebounding from a season ago.
