Valparaiso Takes Game Three and Series Over Green Bay
VALPARAISO, Ind. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – The Green Bay softball team dropped the final game of its three-game series to Valparaiso 4-0 on Wednesday afternoon, despite outhitting the Crusaders 7-4 in the game. The Phoenix earned a split yesterday, playing the series in Indiana after poor weather and field conditions prompted a shift in location away from Green Bay.
Valparaiso 4, Green Bay 0
Green Bay (2-18, 1-5) fell behind early in the top of the first, when a bad throw allowed a runner to come in and score with two outs. The Phoenix had a good chance to answer in the bottom half after Jenna Smarzinski doubled to left center, but Hailee Frey was tagged out at home trying to score from first.
The Crusaders added another run in the third inning to go up 2-0, and plated two more in the fifth to get to the final score of 4-0. A Valpo two-run home run made the deficit too much to overcome for the Phoenix.
Frey finished 2-for-3 on the day, but Green Bay left 10 runners on base in the contest. Valpo left only three, helping them take the series two games to one.
The Phoenix returns to the field this coming weekend when it visits Oakland in Michigan for a three-game set. The series has been moved to Saturday and Sunday, due to the high probability of rain on Friday. Game times have not yet been announced.
