Green Bay Opens League Play with Strong Showing vs NKU, Wins 70-39
GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – The Green Bay women's basketball team opened Horizon League play against Northern Kentucky (4-9, 0-1) Thursday night at the Kress Events Center, downing the Norse 70-39 to move to 10-2 on the season and 1-0 in conference action.
Although the Norse led things 5-2 at the 8:03 mark in the first quarter, the Phoenix wasted no time responding and constructing a 17-5 lead by the end of the first. Green Bay continued to keep things rolling into the second quarter and didn't allow a Norse basket until there was 3:58 left in the half. The Phoenix went on a 26-0 run over that 14 minute, five second time period to lead things 28-5.
Northern Kentucky made a 16-2 run in the fourth quarter to chip into Green Bay's once 38-point lead but was never able to make it a competitive contest, as Green Bay went on to win 70-39 in its league opener.
Mehryn Kraker scored a game-high 17 points, doled out five assists and finished 7-of-9 from the field. Jessica Lindstrom also contributed double-digit scoring numbers this evening, adding 11 points and pulling down five rebounds in 22 minutes.
Green Bay outscored Northern Kentucky 50-8 in the paint and forced a season-high 25 turnovers.
The Phoenix will return to the court on Dec. 31 at the Kress Center at 1 p.m. when it closes out 2016 with Horizon League foe Wright State.
