GREEN BAY, Wis. ( – The Green Bay women’s soccer team notched a pair of second half goals on Sunday afternoon en route to a 2-0 victory over Viterbo in its first scrimmage of the season at Santaga Stadium.

“The team did a lot of things well and we were able to score a couple of goals as a result,” head coach Kacey Burke said. “We haven’t had much time to practice before today, but I’m happy with the way we played considering that fact.”

Sydney Born (Edina, Minn.) gave the home crowd a reason to cheer when she scored the first goal of the game with around 16 minutes left to play in the second half. Born found the ball at her feet off a nice corner kick into the box, thanks to a great pass that led to the quick strike into the back of the net.

The team linked up much better in the second half than it did in the first and a pair of goals were the positive results. The defense also played well as a unit, keeping Viterbo out of the net for the entire 90 minutes.

“With a new coach and new players, we’re all still trying to get a feel for one another and that will come. We took a good step today and I think the team got an idea at how well we can play together,” Burke said.

The second goal of the game was scored by Karina Fredette (Gatineau, Quebec) with under 10 minutes to play in the scrimmage. Fredette took advantage of the one-on-one opportunity against the Viterbo keeper, but it was the pass by Rhiana Stelter (Waukesha, Wis.) from the midfield line that set up the goal beautifully.

The team only opened practice on Wednesday, August 6, but earning a victory at home will go a long way to building confidence as Green Bay nears the season-opener on Aug. 22 at home against IUPUI.

“We had a great crowd come to support us today so we’re definitely excited about that. It’s always huge to get a win at home and we thank everyone for coming out today,” Burke said.
