GREEN BAY, Wis. ( – Breaking a scoreless tie in the bottom of the six, Green Bay junior Hailey Mohrfeld (Menomonee Falls, Wis.) delivered a bomb deep to left field to power the Phoenix to a 2-0 win over Youngstown State at Riverside Park in Allouez on Saturday afternoon.

In the first game of a three-game weekend series to open its home slate of competition, the Phoenix moved to 13-6 overall and 2-1 in the Horizon League, while Youngstown State moved to 15-14 overall and 2-3 in conference action.

It was a quiet game through the first two innings before the Penguins threatened in the top of the third. Loading the bases with no outs, strong defensive play by Green Bay third baseman Miranda Spangberg (Wausau, Wis.) helped starter Ashley Nannemann (Burlington, Wis.) work out of the jam. Spangberg snagged a lineout by YSU’s Miranda Castiglione and quickly tagged the runner at third to turn the double play. She then gobbled up a groundout from Sarah Dowd to end the Penguin threat.

Green Bay got a single hit in the first inning and was held without another until the fifth. However, it got all the offense it needed in the bottom of the sixth to pick up the win. Sophomore Kelli Hutchinson (Trevor, Wis.) led off the inning with a walk and two pitches later Mohrfeld delivered her bomb deep over the wall in left field to put the Phoenix ahead, 2-0.

The Penguins got a single hit in the top of the seventh, but Nannemann got two fly outs to end the game and pick up the shutout win.

Nannemann threw a complete game to improve to 3-4 on the season, allowing five hits with three strikeouts and two walks. Mohrfeld finished the game 1-for-3 with two RBI, while sophomore Marissa Michalkiewicz (Appleton, Wis.) was the lone Phoenix with a multi-hit performance, going 2-for-3.

Youngstown State stranded eight runners and totaled five hits for the game, with five different players totaling a single hit. Casey Crozier threw all 6.0 innings, allowing two runs on four hits with a walk and four strikeouts.

The two teams will wrap up the weekend with a doubleheader tomorrow starting at noon. The games will be played at Riverside Park in Allouez.
