Green Bay Bounces Back with 5-2 Win Over IPFW

KALAMAZOO, Mich. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – After a tough 4-3 loss at Western Michigan on Friday night, the Green Bay men’s tennis rebounded with a 5-2 victory over IPFW on Saturday morning in a neutral-site contest at the West Hills Athletic Club. The Phoenix opened the match by taking the doubles point, and went on to win four of the six singles contests to improve to 7-4 on the year.

Green Bay’s No. 40 doubles pair of Michael Tenzer (Neuried, Germany) and Howard Scott (Exeter, England) clinched the opening point with a hard-fought win at No. 1, defeating Daniel Kang and Andres Cobos 6-5. Sophomores Rowan Isaaks (London, England) and Leopold Gomez Islinger (Weiden, Germany) also picked up a doubles win, beating the Mastodons’ duo of Jonathan Raa and Connor Andrews 6-2 at the No. 3 spot.

The Phoenix won four singles matches to secure the win, including three of them in straight sets. Gomez Islinger dominated his No. 2 contest against Raa, winning 6-1, 6-1. Joey Leto (Downers Grove, Ill.) earned a 6-5, 6-3 victory over Cobos at No. 3, Marius Merz (Heidelberg, Germany) won 6-4, 6-2 against Andrews at No. 6 and newcomer Jorge Gonzalez Soler (Madrid, Spain) battled to a 6-5, 3-6, 10-6 triumph at No. 5.

Green Bay wraps up its busy weekend on Sunday, taking on Toledo at noon.
