Men's Soccer Tripped Up By Drake, 2-1

GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – The Green Bay men’s soccer team rebounded from an early first half deficit, but a late goal in the second half propelled Drake to a 2-1 non-conference win on a rainy Tuesday afternoon at Aldo Santaga Stadium.

Drake improved to 6-5-2 with the win, while the Phoenix fell to 6-4-3.

Lawrence Talery (Coon Rapids, Minn.) made things interesting just over two minutes into the match, beating two defenders and putting a shot on goal that hit the post and deflected out. Drake then took the ball to the other end of the field where Logan North found an unmarked Bryan Jantsch at the far right post where he headed a cross home to give the Bulldogs an early 1-0 advantage.

The Phoenix responded in the 25th minute, capitalizing on increased offensive pressure. Crowding the box, Tyler Swanner (Glen Carbon, Ill.) passed the ball out to Talery along the left goal line. Sending a shot in, Talery hit the post for the second time in the match but this time his attempt had just enough curve, hitting the inside post and deflecting over the head of Drake keeper Darrin MacLeod to knot the score at 1-1.

The score remained level going into halftime, as Drake held a slim 6-5 advantage in shots and a 3-0 edge in corner kicks.

The Bulldogs came out strong in the second half and put several shots on the board before connecting on the game winner in the 78th minute. North recorded his second assist of the match on a cross from left to right, linking up with Ben LeMay who sent a high kick past Kyle Ihn (Wales, Wis.) for the final 2-1 margin.

For the match the Bulldogs had a 19-9 advantage in shots and a 5-1 edge in corner kicks. Talery led the Phoenix with three shots, and Sam Krenzien (Wauwatosa, Wis.) and Swanner each added two. Ihn played the entire match in net, making six saves.

Green Bay returns to action on Saturday in game two of a women’s and men’s doubleheader, taking on Detroit at 2:30 p.m.
