LAVONIA, Mich. ( – The Green Bay softball team led or was tied for the majority of Saturday morning’s game against Oakland at Madonna University, but the Golden Grizzlies scored the game-winning run on a walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh inning to win 4-3 in the first game of the series.

Oakland 4, Green Bay 3

The Phoenix (2-19, 1-6) scored right away in the top of the first inning, when Allie Taylor’s groundout scored the first run of the game when Abby Brinkmeir crossed the plate. Oakland would help Green Bay get a 2-0 advantage when an errant throw on a steal attempt allowed Chyanne Onstad to score from third base.

Oakland responded with a pair of runs to tie it in the bottom of the second inning, thanks to a two-RBI triple. Green Bay was able to throw down a runner at the plate to get out of the inning with the game tied.

Olivia Magaldi hit a grounder to third with the bases loaded and two outs in the top of the fourth, picking up the go-ahead RBI after all runners were safe. A line out ended the Phoenix threat and the visitors took a 3-2 lead.

After both teams went scoreless in a pair of half innings, Oakland tied the game in the bottom of the sixth inning when it loaded the bases with only one out. A sac fly scored the game-tying run, but Katie Rossman was able to get the strikeout and the threat.

After Green Bay went quietly in the top of the seventh inning, the Golden Grizzlies were able to capitalize and earn the walk-off win. A one-out double followed by a wild pitch put the game-winning run at third with only one out. That’s when the Marciniak single landed down the left field line to send Oakland into a frenzy with the win.

Brinkmeier was 2-for-4 in the game with a run scored as Green Bay registered five hits. Rossman allowed four earned runs throughout six and third innings pitched.

The series concludes with a doubleheader tomorrow morning back at Madonna University. The first game is scheduled for 10 a.m. CT/11 a.m. ET.
