Green Bay will be competing in the CBI for the third time in program history, and for the first time since the 2009-10 season when it lost in the Quarterfinals. The Phoenix finished in the top four of the Horizon League for the fifth consecutive season this year, before falling in the Quarterfinals of Motor City Madness to No. 6 seed UIC.
In his second season as head coach, Linc Darner led Green Bay to the No. 3 seed in the conference tournament and had four of his players earn All-Horizon League honors, the most in program history. Charles Cooper (Second Team), Warren Jones (Sixth Man of the Year), Kenneth Lowe (All-Defensive Team) and Khalil Small (All-Defensive Team) each garnered Horizon League accolades for their strong seasons.
The Phoenix lost to Vermont 76-72 in its first-ever game in the CBI in 2009 before winning two games in 2009-10. Green Bay won at Akron before losing in double-overtime at Saint Louis in the Quarterfinals that season.
Green Bay will be facing the Kangaroos for the second time this season, defeating them 95-77 at the Bill Frack Tournament in Bowling Green back on Nov. 21. The Kangaroos, members of the Western Athletic Conference, finished 17-16 overall and 8-6 in the WAC. They are led by LaVell Boyd with 17.9 PPG.
This marks the seventh time in the last nine seasons that Green Bay has played in a postseason tournament. This is the 10-year anniversary for the CBI, which will be utilizing experimental rules. For more information on those rules for this tournament, click here.
The CBI presented by FIVE FOUR is a single-elimination tournament up until the best-of-three Finals, with all games played at campus sites. After the First Round games, the Quarterfinal Round will take place on Monday, March 20, followed by the Semifinal Round on Wednesday, March 22. Prior to the semifinals, the remaining teams will be re-bracketed. The Finals series is a best-of-three in which one team will host two of the three games. Those games will be played on March 27, March 29, and March 31.
Past CBI champions include Tulsa, Oregon State, VCU, Oregon, Pittsburgh, Santa Clara, Siena, Loyola Chicago, and Nevada. Teams from nearly every conference have participated in the event. Twenty-eight teams have used the CBI to springboard to the NCAA Tournament the following year, while another 17 have gone on to the NIT.
ESPN is again the official television home of the CBI presented by FIVE FOUR. ESPNU will televise each game of the best-of-three Championship Series. Roy Philpott and Corey Williams will serve as the broadcast team.
