Green Bay Falls Twice in Jayhawk Invitational
LAWRENCE, Kan. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – Taking part in its third tournament of the season, the Green Bay softball team found itself in Lawrence, Kan., for the Jayhawk Invitational at Rock Chalk Park, falling to Kansas 12-0 in the first matchup of the day and Drake 11-3 the game after.
Kansas 12, Green Bay 0 (5 innings)
Kansas (13-9) didn't waste any time taking advantage of its offensive power in its home park on Friday afternoon, dominating its way to a 12-0 victory over Green Bay (1-11) in the tournament opener for both squads.
The Jayhawks outhit the Phoenix, 11-2, in their first home game of the season with four different Kansas players recording a multi-hit effort. Green Bay’s hits came from the bats of freshmen Chyanne Onstad and Bailey Schultz.
Drake (15-9) jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first two innings of play, forcing the Phoenix to play from a deficit and begin a rally if it were to have any chance of leaving the diamond with a victory. With its back against the wall, Allie Taylor stepped up like she has all season for the Phoenix and smashed a double to right center.
Taylor scored later in the inning after Olivia Magaldi singled to right, bringing Green Bay within four runs with plenty of time left to play.
Drake diminished the Phoenix hopes later in the game after plating four runs in the top of the seventh off six hits, going on to defeat Green Bay, 11-3.
With tomorrow’s rematch with Drake cancelled due to inclement weather, Green Bay will now wait until Sunday to take the diamond against UMKC at 11 a.m. and Kansas at 1:15 p.m.
