Phoenix Falls 2-0 to Ball State in Season's Second Game
GREEN BAY, Wis. – The Green Bay women’s soccer team fell 2-0 to Ball State on Sunday afternoon at Santaga Stadium, suffering its first defeat of the young season. The Cardinals scored a goal in the first half and added another in the second.
The Phoenix (1-1-0) had four shots on goal in the first half, but the Ball State (2-0-0) defense tightened up in the second to not allow another. The Cardinals converted two of their three shots on goal, including the first goal of the game at 26:18 by Gabby Veldman which proved to be the game-winner.
“Today was another step forward for us as a unit. I was extremely pleased with our team’s overall play today. The final product was missing but we will get back to training this week and continue to work. The organization of the back line was tremendous and this solid base will be crucial for us moving throughout the season,” head coach Kacey Burke said.
Ball State certainly earned both scores, as Green Bay goalkeeper Nastacia Behle (St. Paul, Mo.) had virtually no shot at either save.
Green Bay did land nine corner kicks to Ball State’s four, but was unable to convert a couple of quality scoring opportunities.
“Credit to Ball State for a hard fought game and the victory. They are a talented team and executed well on their chances,” Burke said.
The Phoenix will look to bounce back on Friday, Aug. 29, when it plays host to Northern Iowa in the third game of a four-game home stand to open the season.
