Phoenix Volleyball Continues Preparation with Intrasquad Scrimmage
GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – As it continues preparations for next weekend’s Green Bay Country Inn & Suites Tournament, the Phoenix volleyball team held an intrasquad scrimmage on Saturday afternoon at the Kress Events Center.
The scrimmage gave the 13 players on the roster a chance to compete in a match setting on its home floor, where Green Bay will welcome Kansas State, Arizona and South Dakota to a season-opening tournament on Aug. 29-30.
“I thought both sides came out a little tight in the first set and made some errors, but after a few points we settled down into a rhythm,” said head coach Sean Burdette, who will making his Phoenix debut on the sidelines next weekend. “In the first three sets, we had a good first contact and really got our middles involved in serve receive and in transition.”
Burdette pointed to the play of two his veterans – Emily Riese (Fond du Lac, Wis.) and Taylor Kasal (Westmont, Ill.). Riese was an All-Horizon League performer as a sophomore setter in 2013, and the versatile Kasal provides the Phoenix a player who produces in the front and back row.
“I thought Emily did a good job distributing the ball and making decisions today,” Burdette said. “We had good play from Taylor, who did well in the ball control department and also got a lot of kills.”
Green Bay will be tested against stiff competition in the Green Bay Country Inn & Suites Tournament. It will open on Friday at 7 p.m. against Big XII member Kansas State. On Saturday at noon, the Phoenix faces Arizona, a member of the Pac-12 that advanced to the second round of the 2013 NCAA Tournament. The tournament will close with a match against South Dakota at 7 p.m. on Saturday.
“We will get back at it on Monday and start preparations for Kansas State and our other opponents this coming weekend,” Burdette said.
