Women's Soccer Opens 2014 with First Practice
GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – The waiting game is over for first-year head coach Kacey Burke to kick off the 2014 campaign, as the Phoenix women’s soccer team held its first practice on campus Wednesday morning.
A sunny morning welcomed Burke and her squad to the 2014 season, practicing at Aldo Santaga Stadium to spark a new era in women’s soccer. The team has just four days of practice before they take the pitch against Viterbo for their first scrimmage of the year at home on Sunday at 1 p.m.
“There’s been a lot of anxiety to get the season started and the team was excited to get out here and get going. The freshmen were bringing a ton of energy this morning, which is what we love to see as a staff. We want to compete day in and day out, and we did just that in our first session,” Burke said.
The team returns three of its top four point-scorers from a season ago, in addition to the only two goalkeepers to see time in net last year. The Phoenix will feature 10 seniors and only five freshmen, making this year’s team among the most experienced in the league.
“Everyone is getting to know one another and we are all working out the kinks here in the first couple of days. Coach is very detail-oriented and she’s going to be awesome to play for. We are all super excited.” said senior defender Elise Olson (Madison, Wis.).
The team opens the season with four-straight matches at home, with the season-opener being played on Friday, August 22, against IUPUI at 4 p.m.
