Burdette Announces 2014 Green Bay Volleyball Schedule
GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – First-year head coach Sean Burdette announced the 2014 Green Bay volleyball schedule on Tuesday, a 26-match slate featuring six matches against teams which appeared in the 2013 NCAA Tournament.
Of 12 non-conference games, Green Bay will face four NCAA tourney squads, including Arizona (21-13, NCAA Second Round), Marquette (26-6, NCAA Second Round), UT-San Antonio (24-8, NCAA First Round), and Ohio (27-6 (NCAA First Round).
“We have a very exciting and challenging schedule this season with matches against teams such as Arizona, Kansas State, Marquette, Northwestern and Ohio University, among others,” Burdette said. “Our non-conference schedule is probably the most competitive in Green Bay Volleyball history and will test our team early.”
With 17 seasons of Division I coaching experience, Burdette was hired in mid-March to lead the Green Bay program. His debut leading the program in competition will also be the season and home opener for the Phoenix. On Friday, Aug. 29 in the first game of the Green Bay Country Inn & Suites Tournament, Green Bay will host Big XII opponent Kansas State at 7:30 p.m. at the Kress Events Center. On Saturday, the Phoenix will host both Arizona (12 p.m.) and South Dakota (7 p.m.).
“We kick off the season at home with the chance to host Kansas State, Arizona and South Dakota,” Burdette said. ”We look forward to seeing our fans come out early to support Phoenix Volleyball.”
Following the home tourney, Green Bay will play in tournaments at Central Michigan (Sept. 5-6), Marquette (Sept. 12-13) and Northwestern (Sept. 19-21).
Horizon League action begins at home for the Phoenix with contests against Valparaiso (Sept. 26) and UIC (Sept. 27) closing out the month of September.
The first league road match for Green Bay will be on Oct. 3 at Milwaukee. In 2013, the Panthers claimed the regular season and tournament titles to earn a spot in the NCAA Tournament.
The Phoenix will play six of nine contests in October away from home, but welcomes Oakland (Oct. 17) and Wright State (Oct. 18) to Green Bay in the middle of the month and hosts Milwaukee on Halloween Night at 7 p.m.
Rounding out the home schedule, Green Bay plays host to Cleveland State (Nov. 7) and Youngstown State (Nov. 8) before ending the regular season with a weekend trip to Wright State (Nov. 14) and Oakland (Nov. 15).
“The Horizon League will be very competitive from top to bottom and our non-conference slate will push and prepare our team for conference play,” Burdette said.
The Phoenix posted a 14-14 overall record in 2013 and a 9-5 mark in Horizon League play. Three postseason award-winners are expected to be back in 2014, as All-Horizon League honorees Emily Riese (Fond du Lac, Wis.) and Jillian Bauer (Verona, Wis.) and Newcomer of the Year Shannon Hurley (Connellsville, Pa.) highlight a list of six total returners.
