Green Bay Headed to Las Vegas for Holiday Tournament
GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – The Green Bay men’s basketball team will head to Las Vegas this December to compete in the 2014 South Point Holiday Hoops Classic on Dec. 21-22 at the South Point Arena and Equestrian Center, head coach Brian Wardle announced on Monday.
The tough mid-major field will include two regular season conference champions from last season, including Green Bay and defending Big West champ UC Irvine, and Missouri Valley Conference member Bradley and Sun Belt Conference member Arkansas-Little Rock.
“We are extremely pleased to accept an invitation to play in another non-conference event which will provide two competitive games against quality mid-major opponents,” said Wardle, whose team will also compete in the Gulf Coast Showcase in Naples, Fla., from Nov. 24-26. “Sport Tours International recognizes the scheduling challenges for mid-major programs, and we appreciate the invitation to join this strong field in Las Vegas. This tournament will be an important aspect of our preparation for Horizon League play.”
The Phoenix will open the event against UALR on Sunday, Dec. 21 at 1 p.m. CST. Green Bay will then face either Bradley or UC Irvine on Monday, Dec. 22 with the third-place game at 1 p.m. CST and the championship game slated for 3:30 p.m.
The South Point Holiday Hoops Classic is run by Sport Tours International, a Milwaukee-based company.
“We know how hard it is for really good mid-majors like Green Bay to get good non-conference games,” said Bret Seymour, Tournament Director of Sport Tours International. “We are always sensitive to that at Sport Tours. We had this event last season and we knew with all the success Green Bay has had recently it would be a great fit in 2014. While we can’t get good mid-majors home games, we do offer the opportunity for them to play similar teams in a fair, neutral site environment in a popular destination like Las Vegas. Hopefully this gives teams like Green Bay a chance to play good competition without having to travel to another team’s arena.”
Green Bay’s first-round contest will be the first game in program history against UALR, which returns 10 of 13 from last season’s team which went 15-17 overall and 9-9 in Sun Belt action.
UC Irvine graduated only one player from a squad which went 23-12, won the Big West title with a 13-3 mark and advanced to the National Invitation Tournament (NIT). The two teams have met just once previously, with the Phoenix posting a 77-65 win in Green Bay on Dec. 30, 2005.
Bradley went 12-20 in 2013-14 with a 7-11 record in the Missouri Valley Conference. The Braves also appeared in the 2013 South Point Holiday Hoops Classic, falling to Pacific and Portland. Bradley has won each of the previous two meetings in the series with Green Bay, including a 75-69 home win in the 2013 CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament.
