GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – With the 50th overall pick in the 2014 NBA Draft, the Phoenix Suns selected former Green Bay men's basketball standout Alec Brown (Winona, Minn.). The 7-foot-1 Brown becomes the fifth Phoenix player ever selected in the NBA Draft and the first since 1996.

“We had my family and friends together tonight, and I didn’t know what to expect,” Brown said. “I’m just blessed to have been drafted by the Phoenix Suns, and I’m excited to be a part of an organization where I am a good fit and have a great chance to make an impact.

“When I first got to Green Bay, I didn’t know if I was even going to be able to start,” Brown said. “Every year, it became more and more real and the harder I worked. To see it all become a reality and to see all of the hard work pay off feels great. Being at Green Bay helped me mature as a player on the court and as a person off the court taking care of my business. Teams are looking for a guy who will not be a hassle off the court and will take care of business. I just thank Green Bay, Coach Wardle and the coaches, my teammates and every one there for everything.”

In his standout college career at Green Bay, Brown was a three-time All-Horizon League performer while racking up 1,678 points, 800 rebounds and 309 blocks in his career. His 309 blocks shattered the program record and tied the Horizon League mark, and he also finished his career shooting 40 percent (78-195) on three-pointers and 74.8 percent from the free-throw line.

“Once a Phoenix, Always a Phoenix,” said Green Bay head coach Brian Wardle. “It couldn’t happen to a better person and we are all extremely proud of Alec. He has improved and worked extremely hard, and he has always done it the right way. Alec getting drafted is a testament to how he worked out in the predraft process and the maturity and focus he took into these workouts. I think he went to a team that wants him, and he has a great chance of making their team and making an impact.”

During a memorable week in May, Brown participated in the NBA Draft Combine and in UW-Green Bay’s graduation ceremony, where he received his degree. At the combine, Brown led all participants from beyond the NBA three-point line, making 18-of-25.

Brown worked out for 11 NBA teams, with his first workout coming in Phoenix with the Suns.

“Alec’s an elite shooter at 7-foot-plus,” said Ryan McDonough, the Suns General Manager. “We feel like he will be a very good fit for our team with our style.”

As a senior in 2013-14, Brown averaged 15.3 points, 5.7 rebounds and 3.1 blocks per game in helping the Green Bay to a 24-7 overall record and a Horizon League regular season title with a 14-2 mark in league play. He knocked down 42-of-100 shots from long range and finished his career shooting 40 percent from beyond the arc (78-195).

Brown started from the first game of his freshman season and eventually started 125 of 126 career games for the Phoenix. The Winona native was the first recruit signed by Wardle after he was named Green Bay’s head coach.

“To go from four-plus years ago when we had a home visit with him as the first guy we signed, to now see him on the NBA Draft after getting his degree, it is why we do what we do, and why we work so hard for our players and push them outside their limits," said Wardle. "On and off the court, we try to help them realize the dreams they never thought would come true.”

Former Phoenix standouts Tom Anderson (1978), Ron Ripley (1979), Tony Bennett (1992) and Jeff Nordgaard (1996) were also NBA Draft picks.
