GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – The Horizon League announced its spring academic all-league teams on Wednesday, and six UW-Green Bay student-athletes were honored. Individuals selected were participants in eight spring sports, and represented success in competition as well as in the classroom.

Teams were voted on by the league’s faculty athletics representatives and athletics communications directors from among the eight spring sports the Horizon League sponsors: baseball, softball, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s tennis, and men’s and women’s outdoor track and field. Green Bay participates in five of the eligible sports.

Earning academic all-league honors for the Phoenix were softball’s Marissa Michalkiewicz (Appleton, Wis.), Hailey Mohrfeld (Menomonee Falls, Wis.), Stacey Butts (Greenfield, Wis.) and Shannon Butts (Greenfield, Wis.), and men’s tennis players Michael Tenzer (Neuried, Germany) and Leopold Gomez Islinger (Weiden, Germany).

Michalkiewicz, a sophomore, collected the honors for the first time in her career. Carrying a 3.934 GPA in business administration with a double minor in environmental science and environmental policy and planning, she was one of just three players to start all 41 games for the Horizon League champions this season. She collected first team All-Horizon League honors and was also named to the all-tournament team in addition to taking home Horizon League Player of the Week honors on March 3. Michalkiewicz led the team with 46 hits, four triples, five home runs and 37 RBI.

A junior shortstop for the Phoenix, Mohrfeld posted a 3.982 GPA while majoring in human biology. Named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District 6 squad earlier in the spring, Mohrfeld has also been named to the Horizon League Honor Roll each semester of eligibility. Starting 40 of the 41 games for Green Bay this season, Mohrfeld hit .317 and led the team with 37 runs scored.

Also a CoSIDA Academic All-District honoree this season, senior Stacey Butts earned a 3.843 GPA while working toward a degree in education with a double minor in mathematics and human development. She has also been a member of the HL Honor Roll each season of eligibility. This year Stacey hit .287 in 35 games with 32 starts, and led the team with 173 putouts and just one error at first base (.995).

Sister Shannon Butts, a senior catcher, was also named to the spring academic all-league squad with a 3.711 GPA in democracy and justice studies and a minor in psychology. A member of the Horizon League Honor Roll each season of eligibility, on the field this season she also took home second team All-Horizon League honors and was named to the all-tournament team. In 33 games with 30 starts, Shannon led the team hitting .416 with 37 hits and 18 RBI.

Junior Michael Tenzer had a successful spring campaign that cumulated with him taking home Horizon League Player of the Year accolades for the second-consecutive season. He was also recognized as the conference’s male scholar-athlete of the month in April, and currently has a 3.77 GPA in business administration. Tenzer helped the Phoenix go 18-8 overall, claim the Horizon League Tournament Championship and advance to the NCAA Tournament. Individually he posted an 18-5 singles record, including going 12-5 in the No. 1 slot, and was also 17-7 at No. 1 doubles.

Gomez Islinger owns a 3.625 GPA as a business administration major. He finished the season with an impressive 20-2 singles record, playing every match in one of the top three spots, and owned an 11-match unbeaten streak in singles play to conclude his sophomore campaign. Named the Horizon League Player of the Week on February 17, Gomez Islinger helped the Phoenix to an 18-8 overall record, Horizon League Tournament title and NCAA Tournament appearance.

A total of 89 student-athletes were honored from the conference’s nine members, led by 20 selections from Youngstown State.
