GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – There will be a lot of college seniors donning caps and gowns this weekend across the country, marking the successful end to their time on campuses nationwide. Some of those seniors will be off to new jobs or graduate school, while others will continue the job search with the unknown of where they will next call home.

Alec Brown fits into that second category. The 7-foot-1 former Green Bay men’s basketball standout is planning to walk across the stage at the Kress Events Center on Saturday, receiving a bachelor’s degree from UW-Green Bay in business administration. From there, he doesn’t know exactly where his job will be, but he knows that his first occupation will be professional basketball player.

Before putting on his cap and gown in Green Bay, Brown will be donning more comfortable attire this week in Chicago, where he is one of just 60 players invited to the 2014 NBA Draft Combine, which takes place from Wednesday-Sunday.

At the combine, which begins the final push to the 2014 NBA Draft set for June 26, Brown will continue to build his basketball resume and portfolio in front of NBA general managers, scouts, medical staff and coaches. He will be playing a game, but it will be as part of an important job interview in an arena of fierce competition.

However, as Green Bay head coach Brian Wardle points out, Brown will be one of the most mature interviewees at the combine.

“Alec will be one of the most mature and experienced players at the combine, and I think that will serve him well as he goes through the experience,” Wardle said. “I’m confident he will do well at the combine and show off his hard work ethic and abilities that will be attractive to NBA teams. Off the court, the priority he has placed on finishing school strong and earning his diploma is an example of his maturity.”

The combine divides players in position groups and takes them through a variety of tests and drills on and off the court. Brown will have his height, weight, wingspan, standing reach, body fat percentage and hand size measured. He will also participate in a series of drills, including fastbreaks, weaves, 3-on-3 scrimmages and shooting. Prospects are also tested on their athletic ability with tests measuring strength, straight-line speed, agility and vertical.

In his standout college career at Green Bay, Brown was a three-time All-Horizon League performer while racking up 1,678 points, 800 rebounds and 309 blocks in his career. His 309 blocks shattered the program record and tied the Horizon League mark, and he also finished his career shooting 40 percent (78-195) on three-pointers and 74.8 percent from the free-throw line.

“Alec has meant so much to this program and has helped us rise to another level,” Wardle said. “We know that he will continue to be a great representative of Green Bay Basketball and this University as he moves forward as a graduate, both on and off the court.”

The NBA Combine will air live on ESPNU on Thursday and Friday from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. CST and on ESPN2 on Thursday and Friday from 12-2 p.m. CST.
