Phoenix Swimming & Diving Set for 2014 Horizon League Championships

GREEN BAY, Wis. ( – After wrapping up long and successful regular seasons earlier this month, the Green Bay men’s and women’s swimming and diving teams are set to compete at the 2014 Horizon League Championships this week in Cleveland, Ohio. The four-day conference meet – hosted by Cleveland State at the Robert F. Busbey Natatorium – begins Wednesday, Feb. 26 and concludes Saturday, March 1.

The Phoenix women finished the 2013-14 regular season with an impressive 9-2 dual meet record and went 18-2 against all opponents when including invitationals. Green Bay won its first nine duals of the year, and also took the team title at the IUPUI House of Champions meet in late November.  

The men’s squad posted a 5-4 dual meet record, winning five in a row from Nov. 2 to Jan. 18. The Phoenix men also had success in multi-team events, winning the Butler Invite on Jan. 26 and finishing a close second at the House of Champions meet.

CHAMPIONSHIP COVERAGE: Fans unable to make it to Cleveland for the 2014 Horizon League Championships have a variety of ways to follow the action. LAST YEAR: The 2013 Horizon League meet saw the women’s squad place third in a tight race for the team title and the men’s team finish fourth. The Phoenix women totaled 647 points over the four days, finishing just 10.5 points behind second-place Cleveland State (657.5) and 41.5 points back of champion Milwaukee (688.5). The men’s team finished with a total of 533.5, led by Newcomer of the Year Willem Poelmans (Hasselt, Belgium), who won a pair of individual titles in record-breaking fashion.

WEEKLY AWARDS: The Phoenix brought home multiple weekly awards in 2013-14, as the women’s squad had three and the men’s team had two. Senior Parker Wolf (Kohler, Wis.) was named Horizon League Women’s Swimmer of the Week twice this season, winning on Oct. 29 and Jan. 14, and freshman Natalie Neuwirth (Stevens Point, Wis.) won the award on Nov. 26. Poelmans was recognized twice on the men’s side, picking up Horizon League Men’s Swimmer of the Week honors on Jan. 21 and Feb. 11.
