GREEN BAY, Wis. ( – Working toward fulfilling a lifelong dream, former Green Bay women’s basketball standout Lydia Bauer will continue her basketball career overseas after signing with GDESSA in Portugal this past week.

“I had a goal of playing [overseas] next September and I had told the girls already there to keep an eye out,” Bauer said. “One of Stephanie’s [Sension] teammates was sent home the other week, and last Saturday I got a call and was offered a contract.”

Bauer will join former teammate Stephanie Sension on the roster at GDESSA, a team located in Barreiro, Portugal, near the capital city of Lisbon. She becomes the fourth player from the class of 2013 to head overseas, a class that includes Sension, Adrian Ritchie (Nottingham – England) and Sarah Eichler (Stevsngade – Denmark). The 2013 class now has more athletes competing professionally than any other class in team history.

“To have four teammates over there playing on separate teams is one thing, but to be able to have the chance to play with a former teammate is a very unique opportunity that I am excited about,” Bauer said.

Bauer finished her career at Green Bay just shy of the 1,000 point mark with 988. A four-year player and two-year starter, she also posted 366 rebounds, 161 assists, 43 blocks and 123 steals. She had her best campaign as a senior, averaging 10.1 points and 4.6 rebounds in 32.1 minutes of action.

Bauer also helped lead the team to four Horizon League titles and NCAA Tournament appearances, advancing all the way to the Sweet 16 during the 2010-11 season.

It will be a quick turnaround for Bauer, who has just over a week to tie up loose ends in Green Bay before heading to Portugal.

“It was a hard decision to leave behind a lot of things I had going on in Green Bay, but I knew I wanted to pursue what I really wanted to do,” Bauer said. “It’s exciting and nerve-racking. I have a lot of commitments here that I’m shuffling around, but people are being very understanding.”

“I’m nervous and anxious to be living in a foreign country, but excited I get to do it with Stephanie. It will be exciting to put it on my life resume and to really embrace the culture while I’m over there while also playing basketball.”
