GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – Winners of six-straight games, Green Bay begins a four-game road trip with its final non-conference game of the season, playing at Chicago State on Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m. The contest will be a rematch of the 2012-13 season opener at the Resch Center, which the Phoenix won 72-67 behind 31 points from Chicago native Keifer Sykes. In the game, Sykes set school records for free throws made (17) and attempted (19) and Green Bay made a program-record 41 free throws.

In last week’s wins over Cleveland State and Youngstown State, Sykes averaged 19.5 points, 6.5 rebounds and 5.5 assists per game. On Monday, the 5-foot-11 guard was named the Horizon League Player of the Week for the fourth time in 2013-14 and eighth time in his three-year Phoenix career. Sykes is the Green Bay leader in career weekly awards and ranks in a tie for second all-time in Horizon League.

Green Bay’s six-game winning streak is the program’s longest since 2008-09, and the team’s 11-3 start matches the 2004-05 Phoenix team for the best start in the past 17 years. In 2003-04, Green Bay won nine-straight games from Dec. 14-Jan. 10.

INSIDE THE SERIES: Tuesday night’s game will be the 25th meeting between Green Bay and Chicago State. The Phoenix has won 13-straight games in the series with the Cougars and has won six of nine meetings between the two teams in the Windy City.

NATIONAL RANKS: Green Bay ranks second nationally in blocks per game (7.8), eighth in field goal percentage defense (.373) and 20th in assists per game (16.4). In the Horizon League, the team ranks first in blocks per game, steals per game, assists per game, scoring margin and field goal percentage defense.

SECOND-HALF SPURTS: During the Phoenix winning streak, the team has been exceptional on both ends of the court during the second half. In the six second halves, Green Bas a scoring margin of plus-18.0 while shooting 59.8 percent (98-164) and holding its opponents to only 27.5 percent from the field (49-172).

HANDLE THE ROCK: Sykes has games of 7, 8, 9, 9 and 10 assists this season. In those five outings, he has just eight combined turnovers. Against Virginia, he dished out a season-high 10 assists and committed two turnovers. In wins over Pepperdine (7), St. Francis (8) and Youngstown State (9), Sykes did not commit a turnover.

LAST SEASON’S MEETING: Green Bay and Chicago State met in the season opener of the 2012-13 campaign at the Resch Center, and the game was one of the strangest games the team would play all season. Chicago State made eight more field goals and the Phoenix committed 27 turnovers, but Green Bay won 72-67. Sykes made 17-of-19 free throws and scored a then career-high 31 points. As a team, the Phoenix went 41-of-48 from the line.

BROWN’S BLOCKS: Leading the nation’s second-best shot-blocking team, senior Alec Brown (Winona, Minn.) is having the best season of his career in terms of rejections and ranks ninth in the country. Averaging 3.6 per game, the 7-foot-1 senior has accumulated 50 blocks in 14 games in 2013-14 and is on pace to break his own school record of 89. Brown now owns each of the top-four spots on the program’s single-season blocks chart (50, 59, 67, 89).

SENIOR SURGING: Brown has been exceptional during Green Bay’s six-game winning streak. In the six wins, Brown is averaging 20.3 points, 6.8 rebounds and 4.3 blocks per game while shooting 57.3 percent from the field, 45.5 percent from long range and 83.9 percent from the free-throw line.

RECORD IN REACH: At the beginning of the season, the chances of Brown breaking Youngstown State’s Damian Eargle’s Horizon League record for career blocks would have seemed like a longshot, but due to his terrific start to the season the record is in reach. With 265 career blocks, Brown is now he is only 44 rejections shy of breaking Eargle’s record of 309, set last season.

MOVING ON UP: Brown, the lone player in Horizon League history with 1,400 points, 700 rebounds and 250 blocks, now ranks 10th in Green Bay history in scoring (1,438 points) and fifth all-time in career rebounds (719). Sykes, with 1,147 career points, is three away from passing Tom Brown into the program’s top-20.

TREMENDOUS TEENS: Sykes turned 20 years old on Dec. 30 after scoring 1,108 points in 76 career games as a teenager. The 5-foot-11 Chicago native ranks 21st all-time on the program’s scoring list, has won a Phoenix record eight Horizon League Player of the Week awards and became the third-fastest player in Green Bay’s Division I era to reach 1,000 points.

STREAKING SOPHOMORE: Sophomore Jordan Fouse (Racine, Wis.), the Horizon League’s leading rebounder at 8.4 per game, has now grabbed five or more boards in 33-straight games dating back to his freshman season.

FOUSE OF FURY: Fouse had a terrific start to conference play last week. The 6-foot-7 forward had 15 points, 7 rebounds, 5 assists and 3 steals in Green Bay’s win over Cleveland State. Fouse then had 10 points, 7 rebounds and 4 steals against YSU. After starting the season shooting just 39.7 percent in the first 12 games, Fouse made 12-of-15 shots last week, including a 7-for-8 effort against Cleveland State.
