Alec Brown Named Horizon League Player of the Week
GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – After posting a triple-double on Saturday in Green Bay’s 92-57 victory over Minnesota Duluth, senior Alec Brown (Winona, Minn.) has been named the Horizon League Player of the Week, the league office announced on Monday. It is the second career weekly award for Brown and the second consecutive week that a Phoenix player has earned Horizon League Player of the Week accolades (Keifer Sykes).
In Green Bay’s win on Saturday, Brown finished with 15 points, 10 rebounds and 10 blocked shots in 31 minutes of action. The 7-foot-1 Brown became the first Phoenix player or Horizon League player to ever record a triple-double which included blocked shots.
Brown is the second Phoenix player to record a triple-double. Javier Mendiburu posted a pair of triple doubles in his Green Bay career, against Wright State on Feb. 28, 2004 (17 points, 12 rebounds, 10 assists) and at Youngstown State on Feb. 5, 2005 (10 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists).
Brown has rewritten the Green Bay record book for blocked shots in his 99-game Phoenix career. He broke the career blocks record during his sophomore campaign and now with 229, he has 97 more blocks than any other Phoenix player in program history. Brown’s 89 blocks as a sophomore mark the single-season program record, and he owns the program’s top three single-game rejection totals. Eleven times in program history a player has blocked six or more shots, and Brown accounts for six of those 11.
With Brown on the roster, Green Bay has set a team record for blocks in a season in each of the past three seasons. The Phoenix blocked 119 shots in 2010-11, 142 in 2011-12 and 162 in 2012-13. Green Bay has blocked 31 shots in the first three games this season.
Brown has 14 blocks through three games this season, but the senior has not been alone in stuffing that column of the stat sheet and, with 31 blocks, Green Bay leads the nation in blocks per game (10.33). Sophomore Jordan Fouse (Racine, Wis.) has blocked three shots in each game this season and has swatted at least one in 26-straight games.
With 1,245 points, 648 rebounds and 229 blocked shots in his career, Brown is on pace to become the first player in Horizon League history to accumulate 1,500 points, 750 rebounds and 250 blocked shots.
