GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com)
– First-year women’s tennis head coach Sommer May has announced her first recruiting class, a talented tandem of in-state talent ready to share their skills with the program next season. Green Bay Southwest’s Samantha Pedersen and Maria Neff of Eau Claire Regis will join the Phoenix roster for the 2014-15 campaign, May announced on Tuesday.

Pedersen is coming off a successful senior campaign at Green Bay Southwest, which ended in a third-place finish at this year’s WIAA Division I State Individual Tournament. With 121 career wins, she was named Team MVP this season while also serving as a team captain. In addition to being successful on the tennis court, she can also be found on the basketball court as a member of the Trojans’ varsity girls’ basketball team.

“I am thrilled to have Samantha join our team next fall—she has an all-court game, tremendous athletic ability and has proven her doubles success against the best players in the state,” May said.

A four-time State Individual qualifier, Neff finished her senior season with an impressive 21-8 record at No. 1 singles. She was a team captain during the 2013 season, and is also a member of the National Honor Society.

“It’s very exciting to gain a player with Maria’s competitive playing experience,” May said. “She has a great work ethic, and tremendous passion for the sport.”

Currently sporting the smallest and youngest roster in the Horizon League with four freshmen and two sophomores, the two signees will provide valuable depth on Green Bay’s roster next season—and won’t have to wait long to gain playing experience.

“Not only are Samantha and Maria great tennis players, but they’re great people. I have high expectations that both will make an immediate impact on our program next season,” May said.

With the Fall 2013 portion of the schedule complete, Green Bay will resume its 2013-14 campaign on Jan. 25 at home against South Dakota State.
