GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com)
– After two weeks off, the Green Bay men’s and women’s cross country teams will return to the trails on Saturday for the Horizon League Championship meet, hosted by Youngstown State in Borden, Ohio. The men’s race will begin at 11 a.m. while the women hit the ground running at noon.

Led by sophomore Sarah Mauel (Green Bay, Wis.), the women’s side will look to build on a 2013 regular season that gave the squad more experience and consistency. Mauel finished as the top runner for Green Bay in every meet this season, and finished in the top 50 in all but one race this season. She finished second at the Concordia Falcon Invite on Sept. 14, and earned a fifth-place finish at the Chaparral Invite on Sept. 27.

Senior Alexander Kimble (Green Bay, Wis.) has provided the men’s team with veteran leadership throughout the season while consistently posting impressive finishes. The senior standout finished 23rd against a tough field at the Badger Season Opener hosted by Wisconsin, earned a 14th-place finish at the Falcon Invite and later turned in 24th-place performance at the Chaparral Invite.

MEET INFO: The race will be held at the Boardman Cross Country Course in Borden, Ohio. For more information on the 2013 Horizon League Championship meet, click here.

TRICK OR TREAT: In a team tradition dating back to the 1990’s, numerous members of both teams boarded the bus sporting their best Halloween costumes. Highlights include Kimble as “MacGruber”, junior Heidi Langteau (Stetsonville, Wis.) as Catwoman, freshman Austin Gokey (De Pere, Wis.) as a construction worker, senior Paul Malcore (Green Bay, Wis.) as Macklemore and Mauel and junior Nicole Will (Luxembourg, Wis.) as a blue and a red M&M, respectively.

LAST YEAR’S MEET: The women’s side will look to build on an impressive finish at the 2012 Horizon League Championship meet. The Phoenix finished fifth behind strong finishes from Will and Mauel. Will took the 22nd spot, while Mauel was close behind in 26th. On the men’s side, Kimble finished 34th while then-sophomore Andrew Sorenson (Onalaska, Wis.) took 47th.

NEXT ON THE SCHEDULE: Following Saturday’s championship meet, the Phoenix will compete in the NCAA Great Lakes Regional on Friday, Nov. 15 in Madison, Wis.
