Women's Basketball Picked to Win Horizon League
GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – Tallying 21 first-place votes and 225 total points, the Green Bay women’s basketball team was selected as the Horizon League preseason favorite for the sixth-consecutive season, as announced by the conference office on Monday afternoon.
Voted on by conference head coaches, athletic communications and media personnel, the Phoenix earned 21 of the possible 26 first-place votes. Wright State came in second with one first-place vote and 189 points, while Youngstown State placed third with 165 points. UIC received three first-place votes and 146 points and was followed by Milwaukee (136), Detroit (1 first place vote, 99), Cleveland State (97), Oakland (73) and Valparaiso (40) in the voting.
Individually, the Phoenix had two players named to the preseason all-league teams. Junior Megan Lukan (Barrie, Ontario) was selected to the first team, and senior Breannah Ranger (Skokie, Ill.) was tabbed to the second team. It is the first preseason honor for both.
The lone returning starter from a season ago for the Phoenix, Lukan started all 32 games and averaged a team-leading 4.4 assists in addition to 7.1 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 31.9 minutes per game in 2012-13. In an exhibition game against St. Cloud State last Saturday, Lukan had a game-high 13 rebounds and eight steals as well as 13 points in 27 minutes.
Lukan was joined on the first team by Kim Demmings (Wright State), Katie Hannemann (UIC), Rachel Story (UIC) and Angela Rodriguez (Milwaukee). Demmings was selected as the league’s Preseason Player of the Year for the second-consecutive season.
Ranger saw significant playing time last season, appearing in 30 games and tying for the team lead with an average of 5.1 rebounds per game. She also chipped in 7.3 points while shooting a team-best 53.5 percent (92-172) from the field. Against St. Cloud State in exhibition action last Saturday, Ranger finished with a double-double, totaling a game-high 21 points and 10 rebounds in 29 minutes.
Ranger was joined by Oakland’s Olivia Nash, Youngstown State’s Shar’Rae Davis, Cleveland State’s Cori Coleman and Youngstown State’s Heidi Schlegel.
