Whitney Tornow Named Softball Assistant Coach
GREEN BAY, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – Less than a month following her hire as head coach, Beth Spoehr has tabbed Whitney Tornow as her assistant coach to help lead the Green Bay Phoenix softball program.
Tornow comes to Green Bay with a strong familiarity of Northeast Wisconsin, having spent four standout seasons at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh as a player and three seasons as an assistant coach. In her playing days at Oshkosh, Tornow was twice named NCAA All-American (2009-2010) and garnered WIAC Player of the Year honors in 2009.
“I am thrilled to have Whitney join the staff. Her collegiate coaching experience along with her extensive and successful playing career will be a great addition,” Spoehr said.
While coaching at UW-Oshkosh, Tornow handled the day-to-day activities of the softball program, including planning, promoting, fundraising, field maintenance and strength and conditioning. She has also spent the past two years as a personal trainer, designing and implementing successful workout programs.
A native of Neenah, Tornow was a three-time All-Region team member from 2008-2010, while also being named to the All-Centennial Team in 2013 during her stellar career for the Titans. She will assist the Phoenix softball program in all of the day-to-day activities and will play a key role in recruiting.
“She will be an excellent fit for the Phoenix softball program,” Spoehr said.
The Phoenix tied a program record for wins last season by going 27-14. The team also captured its first-ever Horizon League regular season championship, while making its second-ever appearance in the NCAA Tournament before being eliminated in Minneapolis. Jean Rivett retired following 13 seasons as head coach of the Phoenix.
