VALPARAISO, Ind. GreenBayPhoenix.com) –
The Green Bay men’s tennis team (16-6, 6-0 HL) capped off its perfect Horizon League season on Sunday afternoon, defeating Detroit 6-1 in its regular season finale in a neutral-site contest at the Valpo Tennis Complex. The win ensured the Phoenix sole possession of its first regular season conference title.

Green Bay will be the No. 1 seed in next weekend’s Horizon League Championship in Indianapolis and will face the winner of fourth-seeded Wright State and fifth-seeded UIC on Saturday at 9:30 a.m. CT.

The Phoenix clinched the match’s opening point with wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles. Michael Tenzer (Neuried, Germany) and Joey Leto (Downers Grove, Wis.) first defeated Detroit’s Mike Basha and Michael Cheung 8-2 at No. 3, and seniors Erik Finkenbrink (Duelmen, Germany) and Craig Cox (Surrey, England) battled past Alex Latosinsky and Cesar Serrano 8-6 at No. 1.

Green Bay won all but one singles contest, including four of them in straight sets. Tenzer rolled past Basha 6-1, 6-3 at No. 1, Finkenbrink defeated Serrano 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2 and Cox came from behind to defeat Latosinsky 3-6, 6-3, 10-6 in the No. 3 spot.

A pair of freshmen also earned singles wins on Sunday, as Howard Scott (Exeter, England) won 6-2, 6-2 at No. 5 and Rowan Isaaks (London, England) cruised 6-1, 6-2 at No. 6.

Green Bay will look to repeat as Horizon League tournament champions next weekend in Indianapolis, as the Phoenix claimed its first league title and first trip to the NCAA Tournament in 2012.
