MADISON, Wis. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – Earlier this season, the Green Bay softball team stunned perennial power Notre Dame in a road win. The Phoenix (10-19, 3-6 HL) can now add #rv Wisconsin (30-9) to the list of BCS powers its defeated this season after a 2-1 victory over the Badgers in the first game of a doubleheader on Tuesday. The Badgers then used a two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth inning to win game two 4-3.

Game 1: Green Bay 2, Wisconsin 1

Senior Allison Goecks (Beloit, Wis.) and sophomore Hailey Mohrfeld (Menomonee Falls, Wis.) were the stars of game one. Goecks picked up her fifth win of the season in a complete game while allowing just three hits and one earned run while striking out and walking four. Mohrfeld picked up two of Green Bay’s four hits in the contest, finishing 2-for-3 while scoring both runs.

With two outs in the bottom of the first, Wisconsin used an RBI double to take a 1-0 lead. The Phoenix wasted little time replying, as Mohrfeld led off with a triple. Junior Miranda Reinke (Milwaukee, Wis.) used a sacrifice play two plays later to bring Mohrfeld home at tie the game at one apiece.

Neither team could break through outstanding pitching performances from both sides before Mohrfeld picked up a single to right field in the top of the seventh. Two plays later, Reinke reached on an error that allowed Mohrfeld to cross home plate from second.

Goecks (5-6) held strong in the home half of the seventh, sealing the 2-1 win over the top vote-receiving team in the ESPN Softball Poll.

In addition to Mohrfeld’s 2-for-3 day, senior Danielle Peerenboom (Appleton, Wis.) went 1-1 while junior Stacey Butts (Greenfield, Wis.) picked up the team’s fourth hit in four trips to the plate.

Wisconsin’s Meghan McIntosh picked up the loss (8-4) in a complete game while allowing four hits and two earned runs with six strikeouts and just one walk.

Game 2: Wisconsin 4, Green Bay 3

Green Bay jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in game two, but a two-run shot from the Badgers in the bottom of the sixth inning crushed the Phoenix’s hopes of sweeping its in-state rival.

Senior Jess Hrncar (Bristol, Wis.) led off the contest with a double before freshman Marissa Michalkiewicz (Appleton, Wis.) singled to bring her home two players later for a 1-0 lead. Reinke reached on an error later in the inning, allowing both Mohrfeld and Michalkiewicz to cross home plate and grant the visitors a 3-0 advantage.

Wisconsin began to slowly chip away at Green Bay’s lead in the bottom of the second with a two-out RBI double. The two-bagger cut Green Bay’s lead to 3-1, but a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the third cut the margin to just 3-2.

With nobody out in the bottom of the sixth, Wisconsin’s Whitney Massey hit a two-run homer to center to give the home team a 4-3 advantage, her eigth longball of the year. The Phoenix escaped the half-inning without further damage, but was unable to score in the top of the seventh.

Sophomore Lauren Danner (Kaukauna, Wis.) took the loss to bring her record to 1-2. She put in five innings of work while allowing 13 hits and four earned runs with three strikeouts and two walks. Freshman Briana Cavin (Elk Grove Village, Ill.) pitched an inning of relief with two walks.

Michalkiewicz led the way with a 1-for-3 effort and an RBI, while Hrncar finished 1-for-3 with a run scored. Mohrfeld went 1-for-2 and Peerenboom finished 1-for-3.

The Phoenix will return to action this weekend in a three-game series at Wright State.
