CHICAGO, Ill. (GreenBayPhoenix.com) – The Green Bay softball team improved to 8-16 overall and 2-4 in Horizon League play after closing a three-game series at UIC with a 9-1 thumping of the Flames. Thursday’s win snapped a four-game losing streak while freshman Brian Cavin (Elk Grove Village, Ill.) picked up her third win of the season.

Game 1: UIC 9, Green Bay 1 (Five Innings)

On a chilly day in the Windy City the reigning Horizon League Pitcher of the Week Devin Miller had a career day on the mound, throwing a no-hitter for UIC while pitching all five innings.

Green Bay started off strong as junior Stacey Butts (Greenfield, Wis.) drew a walk with one out in the top of the first inning. Freshman Marissa Michalkiewicz (Appleton, Wis.) followed her by reaching on a fielder’s choice, but both runners reached safely. Butts and Michalkiewicz stole third and second, respectively, before Butts later scored on a wild pitch.

The Flames loaded the bases with nobody out in the home half of the first before a single to center scored two runs. UIC added two more runs with the help of a single up the middle and later a sacrifice fly to right field.

UIC tacked on another run to make it 5-1 with an RBI double, and added four more runs to make it 9-1 before sophomore pitcher Lauren Danner (Kaukauna, Wis.) came in and retired two straight batters to end the inning.

The Phoenix was unable to muster any offense for the remainder of the game, sealing the five-inning loss and the no-hitter for UIC’s Miller.

UIC strung together 12 hits but had three errors, while the Phoenix had just one error on the afternoon. Miller received the win with five innings of work and six strikeouts, a walk and an earned run. Green Bay senior Allison Goecks (Beloit, Wis.) received the loss after 1 1/3 innings of work and 10 hits, nine earned runs, two walks and a strikeout. Danner pitched 2 2/3 innings of relief and allowed just two hits and a walk.

Game 2: UIC 6, Green Bay 1

Green Bay again faced Miller on the mound in game two, but the Phoenix strung together four hits and added a run in the seventh inning.

The Flames jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning after an error and later a wild pitch. The home team tacked on four more runs in the bottom of the third to make it 6-0 after another infield error and a single up the middle.

In the top of the seventh, the Phoenix loaded the bases with nobody out after an error, a fielder’s choice and a walk. Sophomore Tia Collins (Orfordville, Wis.) kept the bases full afte reaching on a fielder’s choice, but junior Miranda Reinke (Milwaukee, Wis.) was tagged out at home for the first out. Senior Jess Hrncar (Bristol, Wis.) stepped up to the plate next and grounded out to the shortstop, but scored fellow senor Danielle Peerenboom (Appleton, Wis.) to cut the deficit to 6-1. Green Bay was unable to bring anyone else across the plate, resulting in the 6-1 defeat.

Miller (10-11) again received the win for the Flames after a complete game with four hits, an earned run, three walks and six strikeouts. Junior Ashley Nannemann (Burlington, Wis.) received the loss (1-4) after allowing nine hits, six runs with five earned and a walk. She also struck out three during her six innings of work.

Hrncar led the way with a 2-4 effort and an RBI at the plate, while freshman Kelli Hutchinson (Milwaukee, Wis.) and Collins each went 1-3.

Game 3: Green Bay 9, UIC 1 (5 Innings)

With two down and the bases loaded in the top of the first, an RBI single from Hutchinson scored Hrncar to give the visiting team a 1-0 lead before Hrncar used an RBI single of her own in the second to score senior Paige Newtols (Green Bay, Wis.).

UIC replied with an RBI single of its own in the home half of the second, but it would be the last time the home team would cross home plate in the contest.

Freshman Alyssa Johnson (Elmhurst, Ill.) led off the fourth with a solo homer to push the lead to 3-1. With two outs, Green Bay scored four more runs to push its lead to 7-1. Michalkiewicz scored after Hutchinson reached on an error before Peerenboom hit a three-RBI double, giving her 89 RBI for her career—just 11 away from the program record of 100 set last year by former standout Alli Rivera.

Michalkiewicz hit her ninth double of the season in the fifth inning to score Stacey Butts, moving into a tie for the eigth-most doubles in a season in team history. Reinke added a two-out RBI single to bring Michalkiewicz home, sealing the 9-1 victory.

Cavin (3-5) picked up the win with seven hits, one earned run, two walks and two strikeouts across five innings of work. UIC’s Devin Miller took the loss after allowing six hits and five runs with four earned in 3 2/3 innings.

Michalkiewicz and Stacey Butts each went 2-4, while Peerenboom was 1-3 with three RBI. Hrncar, Reinke and Johnson each went 1-3 with a run scored and an RBI while Hutchinson finished 1-4 with a run and two RBI.

Green Bay’s three-game series against Cleveland State originally slated for this weekend has been postponded due to snow still on Ben Garot Field, but the Phoenix will return to action next week for a doubleheader at Western Illinois on April 10.
